Sustainable
Communities and Nonmotorized Transportation - Information
Resources
Sustainable development, also known as "smart
growth" is increasingly promoted as an antidote to urban sprawl that
destroys natural areas and promotes dependence on transportation that
depends on fossil fuels. A key component is to create an environment that
makes nonmotorized transportation - walking and bicycling - a viable means
of transportation in the community. Join members from the Transportation
and Environment and Natural Resources Divisions, and professionals who
plan transportation systems for sustainable communities as they explore
this growing trend. Related web sites: FHWA's Pedestrian and Bicycle
