SLA Sci-Tech Division e-Discussion List (SLA-DST) Information:
The purpose of SLA-DST is to promote communication among the members of the Science-Technology Division of SLA and other interested parties via an unmoderated email list. It should help special librarians everywhere advance their role as information professionals in their respective institutions. Topics of posts to the list include information about the division and its activities, conference information and opportunities, resource sharing, reference questions, job announcements, reviewer or publishing opportunities, announcements about member publications, course and professional development opportunity announcements, research surveys, and sci-tech library-related news.
To subscribe to the SLA-DST discussion list, send an e-mail to lyris@sla.lyris.net with the SUBSCRIBE command in the body of the message. No subject line is necessary. Please do not include any signature or formatted text in the message. Your text message should read: Subscribe SLA-DST your-e-mail_address "FirstName LastName"
To post a message to the list, simply send an e-mail to: SLA-DST@lists.sla.org. Please be sure to include a short yet informative subject line. Mentoring Program:
Since the summer of 1998, the Sci-Tech Division of the SLA has offered a mentoring program for new members and students. This program is administered by the Student Relations Committee. This program partners interested persons with an experienced member of the profession in their area of interest.
What you get out of participating:
- Having a contact person within the profession who can act as a guide and mentor.
- Being able to ask questions of the mentor regarding job searching and preparation for the profession.
What do mentors get out of it:
- The satisfaction of supporting the "Next Generation" of the library community.
- Meeting new people in the profession.
What the relationship is like between mentors and mentees:
Typically, the mentor will contact the mentee several times during the year just to touch base. Otherwise, the mentee can contact the mentor whenever they have a question or concern they wish to discuss with their mentor. Anything relating to the profession is fair game: job search and interview tips, help with answering reference questions in a field, guidance with professional development, etc.
How do I become involved as a mentor/mentee or who do I contact if I wish to ask further questions:
Students and newcomers to the division are encouraged to contact the Chair of the Student Relations Committee of the Science-Technical Division to be assigned a mentor. Members of the division who would like to be mentors are also encouraged to contact the Chair of the SLA-ST division.
