The person we want to hire:
Memorial University is seeking an energetic and highly motivated librarian with a strong service orientation who enjoys interacting with people. The successful candidate will have a degree from an ALA accredited graduate program. The candidate will have significant course background in one or more of the core disciplines of the physical sciences, and an understanding of currently published research in these disciplines. Since our future will be defined by emerging technologies, familiarity with the current state of information technology and a commitment to keep abreast of its evolution are also needed. Previous experience in collection development and/or library instruction and/or reference work are desirable assets, as is experience or familiarity with research methods and with the application of information technology in medium-sized to large academic libraries.
What your responsibilities will be:
As a member of the Collection Development Division the Liaison Librarian will assume responsibility for liaison with some combinations of departments in scientific disciplines at Memorial. The assignment of departments will depend, as much as possible, on candidate’s subject strengths in the core disciplines. Some modification to the areas of responsibilities may be possible to accommodate the candidate’s special strengths in other subject areas. The successful candidate may be asked to assume temporary responsibility for additional subject areas. Liaison duties will include working closely with faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, to identify disciplinary and interdisciplinary needs and to promote library resources in the subject areas.
The successful candidate will be responsible for effectively managing materials budgets to be used for identifying and selecting a broad range of materials, including books, periodicals and digital media in support of teaching and research in the academic departments. Other duties will include evaluations of the relevance of the collection to the university curriculum, consideration and application of new technologies to collection development and the evaluation of gifts for inclusion in the library’s collection.
As a member of the Information Services Division, the appointee will contribute to the Library’s instructional program, teaching information and research skills to undergraduate and graduate students and to faculty in a wide variety of disciplines. You will collaborate with faculty to integrate information/research skills into the curriculum. Through our reference services you will provide information and research help to faculty and students at all levels using traditional and electronic sources and services. Some evening and weekend work is required.
The appointee will report to the Head of Information Services and the Head of Collection Development.

Duties and Responsibilities
In the area of collection development, the Research Librarian for Mathematics and Physics & Astronomy will be responsible for the selection,
assessment, and management of collections and resources in mathematics, physics, and astronomy. The Research Librarian will serve as liaison to
the faculty and students in the Departments of Mathematics and Physics & Astronomy to ensure that their information needs are being met as well as
to promote the Libraries’ services and resources. The Research Librarian will be responsible for monitoring budgets and making collections
decisions that support the teaching and research needs on campus. The Research Librarian will provide subject-based instruction and research
consultations and develop and update subject webpages in support of research in mathematics, physics, and astronomy. The Research Librarian

computer science, and the health and medical sciences. The Research Librarian will provide approximately ten hours of reference service

The Reference Department Langson Library Reference is the research and information center of the Langson Library supporting research and teaching in the arts, education,
humanities, social sciences, and business. Science Library Reference is the research and information center of the Science Library supporting
research and teaching in the biological sciences, physical sciences, engineering, information and computer sciences, and the health and medical
sciences. Both units provide reference services including research consultation, electronic reference, and a wide range of instructional
programs and workshops. Each unit maintains a reference collection consisting of key print resources along with a growing collection of
electronic resources. The Interactive Learning Center (ILC), a unit of Science Library Reference, and the Multimedia Resources Center
(MRC)/Technology Enhanced Classroom (TEC), a unit of Langson Library Reference, provide access to a wide range of specialized media, software,
and electronic resources. These units also maintain a variety of computers and other multimedia equipment for use by the UC Irvine
community and provide classroom and computer support for the Libraries’ instructional efforts. The Reference Department operates in a team-based
environment and the staff consists of 17+ librarians, 10+ library assistants, 2 programmers, and 2 computer resource specialists.
The Libraries

Libraries, Academic Information Resources, and to the University at large.
The Librarian is a member of the Science and Engineering Resource Group
(SERG) and participates actively in the Group's programs. SERG’s focus
is to remake the traditional science libraries into more responsive,
dynamic, and flexible information centers. This is being carried out
through a series of initiatives in which the Earth Sciences Librarian
will be an integral part. Innovative ideas and an ability to adapt to
and create change are highly valued skills for the person in this
position. In short, the Librarian for Earth Sciences will be an
energetic and flexible colleague who is looking towards the future and
wants to be an integral part of creating a new model of digital
librarianship.
Specific Responsibilities:
1. Plans, develops, and manages research collections in the earth
sciences. Selects current and retrospective materials in all formats.
Maintains close contact with faculty and students in the School of Earth
Sciences to insure that library collections support current research and
teaching programs. Is responsible for identifying resources for the
Libraries’ internal development of digital resources, for identifying
externally produced digital resources and data that should be collected
and archived locally, and for working with appropriate staff to develop
the infrastructure for delivering these digital resources.
2. Creates and actively manages the Branner Web space, which is moving
to a Drupal platform starting in the fall. Manages the library blog,
works with the faculty and Branner staff to integrate materials into
SU’s course management system. Seeks out new applications and software
to keep the library up-to-date on Web 2.0 technologies and their use in
an information setting.
3. Provides reference, research assistance, and bibliographic
instruction in the fields of Earth Sciences. Prepares interpretive
materials that enhance access to the collections, including resource
homepages for the Libraries’ web site. Trains staff at the Branner
Library in the use of reference materials in earth sciences.
4. Collaborates with other subject specialists to assure coverage of
interdisciplinary areas that lie outside conventional subject boundaries.
5. In conjunction with the Head of Branner Library, participates as
appropriate in donor and related development activities in support of
the Libraries, working closely with the Library Development Officer and
with the Associate University Librarian for Collections and Services.
Encourages and cultivates close relations with donors of funds and
materials relating to Earth Sciences.
6. Contributes to planning, policies, and programs of the Science and
Engineering Resource Group. Serves on committees and manages library
projects as appropriate.
7. Depending upon qualifications and the needs of the Libraries, assumes
assignments in related fields with similar duties to those listed above.
Qualifications:
1. Knowledge of and interest in academic or research libraries and the
research environment in major universities are required. Strongly desire
a master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science
school or the equivalent in training and experience in understanding and
providing information to a user population. Course work, degree, or
academic / government / corporate library experience in the earth
sciences or physical geography is highly desired.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of the commercial and non-commercial sources
of materials in Earth Sciences and their channels of distribution and
acquisition is highly desired. Ability to evaluate online information
products and services are desired.
3. Strong understanding of computers and data are required; familiarity
of GIS and imagery use and implementation is desired. Effective use of
current technologies, an interest to stay abreast of technological
advances, the ability to acquire new technological skills and resolve
problems in a resourceful and timely manner is required.
4. Demonstrated information seeking skills, including database and
Internet searching, and familiarity with earth sciences resources in
digital formats, are required. Experience in Earth Sciences reference is
desirable.
5. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and collegially with staff
at all levels as well as with faculty and students is required. Ability
to perform effectively in and contribute successfully to a diverse,
multicultural workplace environment is also required.
6. Evidence of the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and
in writing, is required. Strong analytical and organizational skills are
required. Ability to manage time and multiple projects in a complex,

Background
The libraries of Stanford University consist of roughly eight million
volumes and over 500 staff members and include the University Libraries
system and five “coordinate” (school or institution) libraries. The
Stanford University Libraries consist of a main research library (Green
Library) and twelve research branch libraries serving the sciences,
social sciences and humanities.
The Branner Earth Sciences Library and Map Collections is one of seven
science and engineering research branch libraries that form the Science
and Engineering Resource Group. Branner has primary responsibility for
providing services to the faculty, students, and staff within the School
of Earth Sciences (Geological & Environmental Sciences, Geophysics,
Energy Resources Engineering, and Environmental Earth System Science).
Branner also provides GIS/Maps services to the entire Stanford
community. The collection contains approximately 250,000 volumes,
275,000 maps, and 2,200 serial subscriptions. The budget for collections

SUMMARY: The Science Librarian (Half-Time) has responsibility for liaison with one or more science
and engineering departments (determined by the Library's needs and the successful candidate's

Position Scope:
The University of Pennsylvania Libraries seeks a dynamic, service oriented individual to join its Science Libraries team. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Engineering and Physical Sciences Libraries, the Science and Instruction Librarian is responsible for overseeing the Math/Physics/Astronomy (MPA) Library and plays a major role in the planning, promotion and implementation of a robust user instruction program.
As Head of the MPA Library, the Science and Instruction Librarian supervises 1.5 support staff plus student workers, and maintains a collection of 52,000 volumes as well as a wide array of electronic resources. The workshop series is geared primarily towards graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, providing them with exposure to the wide array of resources and services available to them at Penn. The EIC offers the opportunity to help Penn Engineering undergraduate students develop a structured and logical exposure to the organization of information resources in the field of engineering through a curriculum integrated program.
