The Thomson Gale Murray Wortzel Award is awarded biennially by the Social Science Division at the Special Library Association's annual conference. The Award was established by the Social Science Division in cooperation with the Thomson Gale to honor the memory of Murray Wortzel, a long-time member of the Division whose dedication and commitment to both the Division and the Association exemplify the consummate information professional. The winner is presented with a check for $1,000 and a citation.

Either specific achievements and/or sustained excellence may be recognized. Awardees have demonstrated achievements in one or more of the following areas:

• Notable service to the Division through distinguished continued service or participation in a special project;
• Notable service to the Association or the information profession through activities related to the member's standing in the Social Science Division;
• Distinction in facilitating communication and cooperation among Division members within the Association, or throughout the profession;
• Achievement in mentoring activities;
• History of contributions to the profession through research, publications or other activities displaying active participation in the advancement of the information profession;
• Exceptional innovations at the worksite.

Wortzel Award Winners

2007: Nancy Minter, Director of Library and Information Resources for the Urban Institute in Washington DC, will receive the fourth Gale Group Murray Wortzel Award at the Annual Business meeting in Denver. Nancy was cited for her fundraising and mentoring skills while remaining a tireless promoter of the Social Science Division, the Special Library Association and the library profession.

2005: Terry Dean, recently retired from the Institute of Governmental Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, received the third Gale Group Murray Wortzel Award at the Annual Business meeting in Toronto on June 6, 2005.

2003: Michael Kolakowski, Librarian in the Government and Finance Division in the Congressional Research Service, Library of Congress, received the second annual Gale Group Murray Wortzel Award at the International Reception in New York City on Sunday, June 8, 2003.

2001: Roger Haley, librarian of the U.S. Senate Library, retired, was the award's first recipient at the annual conference in San Antonio.
