Treasurer's Report:
The Treasurer's Report was given by Rhonda McGinnis. The Social Science Division
balance as of May 31, 2000, was $26,001.70. The proposed budget for 2000-2001
is $15,000.
Membership Report:
Lyle Minter reported that the Division has approximately 400 members. This
number fluctuated between 425 and 393 throughout the year, but was fairly
stable. He reported that, in a recent survey, the single most important reason
for retaining members was personal contact. He also indicated that the Division
would continue its efforts at recruitment of new members.
Reports for Chairs and Roundtables:
Program Committee: Hetty Barthel handed out a list of the Division's programs at the 2000 Annual Conference and asked each of the Roundtable Chairs to briefly describe their programs. She also announced that Nancy Minter would be the new Program Coordinator for 2000-2001. Division Chair Hogan extended his thanks to Hetty and all of the Program Planners.
Fundraising Committee: Jennifer Little announced that she and her committee had raised $15,800 from 15 different companies. She read the names of those vendors supporting Social Science Division programs and urged everyone to visit them in the Exhibition Hall and thank them for their contributions. She also thanked Ann Sweeney and Maryann Belanger for their fundraising efforts in support of their programs. Lastly, she announced that the Division is looking for a new Fundraising Chair and gave a brief description of the duties of the position.
Bulletin Committee: Bulletin Editor Heidi Yacker encouraged members with suggestions for articles to contact her.
Public Relations Chair: Nancy Minter displayed and distributed sheets of this year's Social Science Division stickers. She encouraged everyone to distribute them to friends and colleagues attending the Conference. She also urged each Program Planner to distribute them to everyone attending their programs.
Archives Committee: Gerard Hogan reported in Division Archivist Joe Hovash's absence that everyone needs to make sure that Joe receives a print copy of everything produced by the Division.
Nominating Committee and Election of Officers: Mike Kolakowski announced that the Committee had nominated Hetty Barthel to run for Chair-Elect and Rhonda McGinnis to run for Secretary/Treasurer. He then read a brief biography of the candidate for each office and opened the floor to additional nominations. Hearing no additional nominations from the floor, a motion to accept the slate as presented by the Committee was made, seconded, and passed with no one opposed and no abstentions. Mike then offered his thanks to the other members of the Nominating Committee.
Old Business
Murray Wortzel Award: Gerard Hogan described the final version of the Award, praised the work of the Award Committee, and announced that the award would be given for the first time at the 2001 Annual Conference in San Antonio.
New Business
None.
Chair's Report:
Gerard Hogan again extended thanks to the Vendors who supported the
Division's programs this year. He also thanked the officers, the committee
and roundtable chairs, and this year's program planners for all their hard
work, which made his year as Social Science Division Chair so enjoyable and
rewarding.
Remarks from the Incoming Chair:
Lyle Minter noted that there were several opportunities available for anyone
seeking to become more active in the Division. He announced that he would
be focusing on ensuring that the Division was in alignment with the SLA Strategic
Plan and assured those present that it was already in a good position in this
regard. In the area of Strategic Learning and Development, he emphasized
that the Division should continue to seek high quality program ideas for next
year's Annual Conference. He also suggested that the Bulletin feature profiles
of the librarians and libraries that are part of the Social Science Division
to educate others about who we are and what we do. Towards Promoting Value:
Marketing and Public Relations, he noted the efforts of the Public Relations
Committee in creating and distributing stickers and brochures at the last
several Annual Conferences. He also noted that the Murray Wortzel Award would
serve to publicize the Division. Lastly, he noted that everyone should be
charged with Guaranteeing the Future. In this regard, each person
should strive for personal excellence every day and seek opportunities to
encourage new members, especially students, to join the Social Science Division.
The meeting adjourned at 8:10.
Respectfully submitted,
Rhonda McGinnis
Secretary
