Peggy
Burnett,
Novartis - 2008 Distinguished Member Award
Claudia
Cuca, Campbell Alliance - 2008 Distinguished Member Award
Karen
Mirabile, Ovid/Wolters Kluwer -
2007 Distinguished Member Award
Our Distinguished Award winner for 2007 has been a dedicated and active proponent
for her clients for many years in the information industry. Demonstrating
her thorough knowledge of the products and services she sells and supports,
she holds her clients’ needs in the forefront of her work. She has worked
for several vendor partners, including Adis International and Ovid Technologies.
A member of SLA and P&HT since 1997, this year’s winner has brought to the
Division comments and ideas from a vendor partner’s perspective, which has
helped make our Division partnerships stronger. She was our Division Chair
from 2004 to 2005, planned our Division Spring Mtg. in Philadelphia in 2004
and was the Program Planner for the Annual Mtg. in New York in 2003. She
improved our Spring Meetings by introducing the Opening Gala Exhibitor event
and by planning several fun and inventive Monday Night Social Events. She
is always full of ideas and enthusiasm for our Division. Please join me in
thanking and congratulating this year’s Distinguished Member Award winner,
Karen Mirabile!
Bonnie
Snow, Thomson Dialog -
2006 Distinguished Member Award
Bonnie has
been a member of SLA since 1985. She is one of those overlooked “stars” who has not been formally recognized for her
leadership. She has been a strong contributor to this Division over the years.
Bonnie was the Division Chair from 1997 to 1998 and the Professional Development
Chair from 1995 to 1996. But what everyone will recognize is her contribution
to Continuing Education within the profession. In her various roles at Thomson
Dialog, Bonnie has probably at some time trained almost every one of us and
yet the demand for her training courses continues. Bonnie has shared her expertise
willingly and effectively for more years than she probably cares to remember!
She is a role model in her dedication to educating her customers and continually
increasing and updating her own knowledge. She has published over 70 articles
and has been singled out as one of 25 experts in the book “Secrets of
the Super Searcher” and “Super Searchers in Health & Medicine”.
Bonnie is truly distinguished in my book!
John
Carey, FOI Services, Inc. -
2006 Distinguished Member Award
John is a dedicated vendor who has exhibited at SLA for many years. In 1999, he finally decided to join SLA. Once joining he decided to take on
one of our less attractive committee positions, Division Archivist. John has been serving on this committee for 5 years now. John received all
of the old division documents from member’s basements etc. and organized everything so we can get our hands on things when we need them. Each
year at our Board meetings John gives out CD’s to all of the Executive Board so they can keep the archive close in case they need it. What
organization! John is currently the President at FOI Services and has been with FOI for 30 years! Just to show you how great a guy John is,
he offered to head up another committee position in addition to the Archivist. John will be working with the Bulletin Editors to get our
great Caplits out the door! Well done John!
Stephanie
Fitch, Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. -
2006 Distinguished Member Award
Stephanie has been a member since 1998. She is an outstanding leader and champion for the profession. I have known Stephanie for many years
and I have watched her grow. She is very devoted and has outstanding organization and strategic ideas. She has held several positions in the
Division such as the Division Chair from 2002 to 2004 and the Strategic Planning Chair for several years. She is always helping the leaders
and members of this Division by offering advice, making new members to feel welcome and to ask members to become more involved. Stephanie has
raised the bar of this Division by thinking outside the box and expanding the speakers to include speakers outside of information professionals.
I would never have made it this far in the Division if Stephanie hadn’t been there the million times I have called her to ask her for advice or
guidance. Thank you, Stephanie for your ingenuity and your guidance. You deserve this award!
Larry
Walton, Mallinckrodt, Inc. -
2006 Distinguished Member Award
Larry has been a member of SLA since 1972. He has been working in libraries since 1956. Larry has been active in SLA at the national level
since he entered the profession. Larry has attended 35 + Annual SLA Conferences. Once becoming involved he held many positions for SLA:
Chair of the 1980 Annual Conference Program Planning Committee, ran 2 times for the SLA Board of Directors, Division Chair FAN for 2 terms,
Past Treasurer LMD, Past President St. Louis Metro Area to name a few. For the P&HT Division Larry held the position of Treasurer for 2
years. He worked diligently to ensure that the Division remained in good financial standing while at the same time maintaining the balance
between generating enough money to fund our division activities and avoiding a bank balance that might be viewed as “profitable”. As you
can see Larry has been involved with SLA from a National, Divisional and local level for years! Not sure how he had the time for all of
this. Some things you might not know about Larry: he has an extensive stamp collection, loves all kinds of music especially classical,
and is often found digging for rocks and fossils, exploring sink holes and crawling through primitive caves. Over the years Larry has
contributed a huge amount not only to this Division and to SLA but to the profession as a whole!
Bernadette
Ewen, Global Director, Library & Information Services,
Sanofi Pasteur - 2005 Distinguished Member Award
The
Distinguished Member Award honours a P&HT Division member for notable
and enduring contributions and service to the Division and the profession.
The award represents a
cumulative evaluation of an individual’s career and emphasizes sustained division
leadership and activity of an exemplary nature.
A
member of the P&HT
Division since 1990, Bernadette has played a major role in shaping the Division
and in setting the very high standards to which
we now hold ourselves accountable.
Bernadette
currently holds the role of Chair of the Nomination Committee, a position
which she has held for the past three years and one in which she
has shown dedication, creativity and tenacity – and she certainly deserves
a great deal of the credit for recruiting the very high calibre Executive Committee
members of recent years!
But
it is Bernadette’s leadership skills that truly earned her this award.
When she assumed the role of Chair Elect for the Division in 2000, she was
tasked with organising the Spring meeting and in accepting this responsibility
drove the standards of that meeting to a whole new level. For our newer members,
our Spring meetings have taken on a life of their own in recent years. The
quality of the sessions, the degree of vendor involvement, the social events,
the food! Bernadette was the first person to set herself the goal of turning
what might simply be a networking and vaguely educational event in to a substantial
and professional association meeting. Bernadette’s quest for the best job she
could do attracted both members and vendors to the event, and those of us who
followed her in the Chair-Elect role merely had to build on the foundations
that she laid
Outside
of SLA, Bernadette is now the Global Director of the group she first joined
before Sanofi purchased Aventis and is the mother of two small girls.
Perhaps tangible proof that indeed, you can have it all? Congratulations Bernadette – and
thank-you!
Diane
Webb, BIZINT - 2004 Distinguished Member Award
Diane
Webb of BizInt Solutions was presented with the Distinguished Member Award
by the
Pharmaceutical & Health Technology (P&HT)
Division of Special Libraries Association on June 8th, 2004 in Nashville,
TN. Diane is
currently the President of BizInt Solutions, a small company providing niche
software to information professionals working in business intelligence within
the healthcare sector.
The
Distinguished Member Award honours a P&HT Division member for notable
and enduring contributions and service to the Division and the profession.
The award represents a cumulative evaluation of an individual’s career and
emphasizes sustained division leadership and activity of an exemplary nature.
A
member of the P&HT
Division since 1997, Diane may not be amongst the longest-serving but she
is certainly amongst those who have given most tirelessly
and generously.
Diane currently holds the role of Production Editor of Caplits, the P&HT
Division Newsletter, and through her leadership, she has turned a simple newsletter
in to a substantial and professional publication. Diane’s quest for the highest
quality has attracted both authors and sponsors to the newsletter and her dedication
to the Division is clearly demonstrated by the amount of personal hard slog
that both she and her staff put in to producing and distributing our newsletter.
In
addition, Diane holds amongst her clients, representatives from all large
pharmaceutical
companies,
plus many biotech and other healthcare-related institutions.
As a vendor, Diane is both highly regarded and deeply respected. Never presenting
a ‘hard-sell, BizInt Solutions personify the meaning of ‘customer-driven’ and
yet, through gentle insistence, rather, than defensiveness, Diane ensures that
the voice of the vendor is always heard at Division business meetings. The
P&HT Division acknowledges that without the support of our vendors, there
would be no Division; Diane Webb has set the gold standard for the vendor-client
relationship. Congratulations!

to the Division and the profession. This award represents a cumulative evaluation

innovative in information content delivery to her customers, continually providing
quality products and services.
A
