MATH Roundtable

Sara Rutter

Mathematics Roundtable Moderator: Sara Rutter, srutter@hawaii.edu

The Mathematics Roundtable will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. in the Washington State Convention Center, Seattle.

I would like to thank the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) for their support of the Mathematics Roundtable.

The first half of session will be devoted to the topic of mathematics education and the possible roles mathematics librarians have in mathematics education at the university level and at the K-12 level:

Carol Hutchins, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences Librarian, New York University will talk about her involvement as a founding member of the New York City chapter of HOLD (Honest Open Logical Decisions on Mathematics Education Reform) a community group organized to learn about and weigh in on the Math Wars being waged in the NYC public school system.

JoAnn Sears, University of Michigan Shapiro Science Library, Mathematics Librarian will present, "Tobacco, brandy, and the slave trade: one librarian's look at mathematics textbooks," in which she will provide a tour of the major mathematics education theories over time, discuss digitized historical mathematics textbooks and the use of e-books in mathematics education.

The second half of the Roundtable will be devoted to open discussion and announcements:

Erich Staib of Duke University Press will update attendees on a new relationship between Duke University Press and Cornell University Library's Project Euclid.

Please send ideas for discussion topics to me at srutter@hawaii.edu.

The PAM Division gratefully acknowledges the financial support for the current Bulletin issue provided by the Nature Publishing Group.
