Astronomy Roundtable at SLA 2008

Ruth Kneale

Get ready for Annual!

The Astronomy Roundtable for SLA 2008 will be held the morning of Wednesday, June 18th from 8-10am, in room 602 of the Convention Center. Mark your calendars! (Please note that the official SLA schedule has the session ending at 9:30am; we will be continuing until 10, into the no-conflict time.)

I'd like to thank Michael Blake for co-moderating with me, Sally Bosken for volunteering once more to take notes, and SPIE for their sponsor-ship and coffee service!

Our speaker list this year is a fun one with some interesting topics. The agenda is as follows (although some details may change between now and Annual):

* Welcome, round-the-room introductions, and announcements (~15 minutes);

* Kerry Kroffe from the Institute of Physics will
speak on the experience of the integration of the AJ into IOP, the plan for integration of ApJ into IOP, and the impact these integrations would have on the library community (http://www.iop.org/EJ/journal/1538-3881 is "the new home of the AJ");

* Chris Biemesderfer is the new Journals Manager for the American Astronomical Society (http://journals.aas.org/); the AAS is undergoing a publisher transition, and Chris will share some of the ideas the AAS is thinking about for the future. He'll also describe the AAS vision for the future of print, and the evolution of their journal products;

* (15-minute break, moderator changeover)

* Karrie Berglund will talk to us about the International Planetarium Society: what it is, its basic function, and opportunities for collaboration and partnerships with us (http://www.ips-planetarium.org/);

* Donna Thompson will tell us what's new with the Astronomical Data System (http://adswww.harvard.edu/). Rumor has it she may share a bit about a secret feature currently being developed by the ADS team!

* Q&A and Open Discussion until end of the session.

Immediately after the roundtable Uta Grothkopf will be having a breakout session about bibliographies based on telescope use in the same room. This is not on the official SLA schedule; this is no-conflict time for visiting the exhibits, but if you're interested, please stick around!
