News Update from the Publisher Liaison Committee

From: John Dupuis

What's New with the IEEE

Some recent enhancements to the Xplore interface include: integration of Standards Online product, educational courses for member purchase and development of a mirror site in Arizona.  IEEE has also contracted with Portico for archival preservation of their content as well as taking a lead in the developing and launching Scitopia.

The IEEE convened its Library Advisory Council in New York City from October 24-26, 2007.  Some new developments in store for the Xplore interface include:  OpenURL compliance, RefWorks/BibTex downloading, search enhancements such as known citation search and tabbed search results, OPAC list updates.  They will also be integrating some third party content such as white papers and application notes as a pilot project for certain users.  Further down the road, Xplore 3.0 will include further personalization options, image searching, faceted and clustered search results.  As well, they will be implementing an author network to resolve all the various author names in the database.  Social software functionality such as communities, tagging and mashups are also in development.

It's also worthwhile to check out the IEEE's training materials pages where quite a bit of new content has been added recently.

The Digital Library Training page
(http://www.ieee.org/web/publications/subscriptions/clientservices/training.html) has a few Flash videos on topics such as Setting Up Email Alerts and Using Session History to Create Complex Searches as well as information on webinar
sessions.  The Print Materials and User Guides
(http://www.ieee.org/web/publications/subscriptions/clientservices/promote/tools_print.html) page has a wealth of posters, flyers and handouts for printing.  Some of it is
also available in MS Word format, making it customizable.

You can also download an IEEE Xplore toolbar:
