Recent publications/articles of interest

Martha Tucker and Nancy Anderson's book, Guide to Information Sources in Mathematics and Statistics is now available, published with Libraries Unlimited, Inc. (Also with PAM's own Judy Matthews as the Series Editor.)

Kris Fowler served as editor (and contributor) for Using the Mathematics Literature available through Dekker. Molly White also contributed a chapter to this book.

In the October 1 2004 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education, John Ewing of the American Mathematical Society makes the case that open access journals alone will not solve the scholarly communication crisis in his article "Open access to journals won't lower prices."

The Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science Education was the featured collection for the June 2004 issue of D-Lib Magazine and is reported as providing "the best selection of math and science education resources on the Internet." Publishing arena

Project Euclid has added a number of online journals in the past few months. See http://projecteuclid.org/ for complete journal information.

Zentralblatt now covers the Mathematics literature back to 1868.

Karen Andrews reported on June 17th that Elsevier has discontinued their Mathematics and Computer Science preprint servers for lack of submissions by researchers. Previously submitted articles are still available through the site but no new submissions are being taken.

On August 5th, Carol Hutchins reported that European Math Society-Publishing House will begin publishing Commentarii Mathematici Helvetici and Elemente der Methematik in 2005.

For Fun -- Mathematics and Football

For all of you college football fans out there, a recent article published in the September 2004 issue of the Notices of the AMS may catch your fancy. An undergraduate math major and two professors from Georgia Institute of Technology explore the mathematical aspects of the BCS bowls and standings in their article "The Bowl Championship Series: A Mathematical Review."
