Message from the Chair
Michael Fosmire I hope everyone has had a productive summer, and for those of you (about half our members) who attended the Annual Conference, that you've recovered from the excitement, the flashing lights, and constant traffic of New York City. In one of the more exciting Business Meetings on record (not to mention the longest), the Special Libraries Association agreed to keep its current name, rather than become Information Professionals International. Even though a majority of members voted for IPI, they fell 50 votes short of the 2/3 majority needed to change the name.
Many thanks go out to Karen Croneis, who like all Chairs, has done the impossible and successfully carried off the organization of an Annual Conference program, while keeping the Division running smoothly. All of you who contributed to the success of the conference, from the program moderators, to the speakers, to committee members and chairs, sponsors, and the rest of the Executive Board, my heartfelt thanks.
Every year, what seems like half the Division becomes involved in some aspect of running the organization, keeping this one of the most vibrant and energized Divisions of the Association. This year is no exception, and I want to thank in advance everyone who volunteered to help. I think we have a great group of folks, and it looks like we'll have another very productive year. Committees have figured out how they fit in to the newly approved Division Strategic Plan, and I look forward to seeing the results of their efforts in the coming year. Check out the list of Chairs and Moderators later in the Bulletin, to see who the brave new (and returning) leaders in the Division are.
Under the assumption that it's never to early to start planning for next year, we've already lined up some special programs for Nashville (in what should be a more relaxing, and less expensive, setting than mid-town Manhattan). Stella Ota is moderating a program on Publisher/Librarian Collaborative Archiving Initiatives, with Vicky Reich of the LOCKSS project scheduled to present. Our own Ruth Kneale is presenting a sequel to her very popular Image and Librarians program of a couple years ago. And, PAM is supporting a program on nanoengineering, for which the Engineering Division is the lead. This is in addition to our usual slate of Roundtables and Updates. I'm very excited about the upcoming conference, and I hope you all can attend.
Good luck in all your pursuits this coming year.
