IOP: Physics Reviews
Lucy Pearce, IOP, introduced a new online service in October, Physics Reviews, to PAMnet. This new service brings together review articles published in IOP's journals, including topical reviews and reviews from the Institute's dedicated review journal--Reports on Progress in Physics. The IOP Physics Reviews service is free to all, but access to the full text of articles is subject to subscription status. Carol Hutchins suggested that since Physics Reviews is a service, and not a citable reference, a name change to reflect this would be less confusing to users. Several PAM members suggested alternate titles. A big thanks to the people at IOP for listening to PAM members and changing the name to IOP: Physics Reviews.

PubScience Passes away
Joe Kraus posted the sad news of Pubscience's demise. Pubscience was discontinued November 4, 2002. George Porter quotes from ALAWON 11(89) http://www.ala.org/washoff/alawon/alwn1189.html that "Negative comments generally originated from members of the information industry and some publishers." From the ALAWON website: "This group has, since 2000, targeted PubSCIENCE because they perceive it to be in competition with two private sector indexes-Scirus (owned by Reed Elsevier) and Infotrieve. Scirus and Infotrieve currently provide no cost indexing services to the public. However, this could change to a fee-based subscription service at any time."

Elsevier
Throughout the last quarter, threads of conversations about Elsevier and "the Big Deal" ran on the list. Whether we were discussing the Journal of Magnetic Resonance, Icarus, or the future of Webeditions, we all seem to be on the same page about Elsevier.
