Mathematics Roundtable

Here's the latest mathematics news. I have included items from the last news update on April 15 until November 10.

Announcements
First, I want to thank Carol Hutchins for leading PAM's effort to assist Charles University in Prague after the recent flooding disaster. See the article earlier in this issue of the Bulletin.

Do not miss Carol's important announcements about a special issue of Geometric and Functional Analysis, including its errata. Her original message was on July 15 and was followed by another e-mail on July 30, http://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0207&L=pamnet&P=2745 and http://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0207&L=pamnet&D=0&P=5333.

Please also keep in mind Kris Fowler's announcement on October 2 about a book which pulls together articles on numerical analysis from the Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics. The book's title is Numerical Analysis: Historical Developments in the 20th Century. On October 3, Dana Roth provided additional information. See http://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0210&L=pamnet&P=1053 and http://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0210&L=pamnet&D=0&P=1308.

Recently published articles
Two interesting articles were recently published in Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship. In the Summer 2002 issue, Beth Roberts published "Mathematics Resources on the Internet," http://www.istl.org/02-summer/internet.html. In the Spring 2002 issue, Laurel Kristick published "A Bibliographic Resource for Statistical Theory: Current Index to Statistics," http://www.istl.org/02-spring/databases1.html.

Bob Seeds, my mentor upon first joining PAM, published "Impact of a Digital Archive (JSTOR) on Print Collection Use" in Collection Building, vol. 21, no. 3, Fall 2002. "The article concerns patterns of use in a scholarly setting where severe remote storage created greater incentive to rely on electronically archived journals." His conclusion is "Can electronic access to scholarly journals be a viable substitute for print? Yes, at least in the case of remotely stored titles, it would appear to be so" (p. 122).

In the October, 2002, issue of Notices of the American Mathematical Society, Sara Rutter published "Mathematicians and the Mathematics Library: A Librarian's Perspective," http://www.ams.org/notices/200209/comm-rutter.pdf. One of the points I most strongly agree with is that "Finding effective means of communicating [changes to the collection] is a challenge and a source of discussion among mathematics librarians" (p. 1080).

News from publishers
On August 20, the EULER-TAKEUP project announced a new Euler search engine. See the announcement, http://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0208&L=pamnet&F=&S=&P=8508.

On July 22, the American Mathematical Society announced "free access to the AMS's 1996 primary journals e-backfile," http://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0207&L=pamnet&F=&S=&P=3380.

I have not seen an update for Project Euclid since April (covered in the May issue of the Bulletin). However, the Web site, http://projecteuclid.org, lists 13 active journals that are part of its package: Advances in Applied Probability, The Annals of Applied Probability, Annals of Mathematics, The Annals of Probability, The Annals of Statistics, Experimental Mathematics, Journal of Applied Probability, Journal of Integral Equations and Applications, The Michigan Mathematical Journal, Natural Resource Modeling, Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic, Rocky Mountain Journal of Mathematics, and Statistical Science.

Elsevier responded to queries about MathematicsWeb, "a portal to over 70,000 articles in mathematics and closely related discplines." See the May 2 e-mail, http://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0205&L=pamnet&P=908. I did not see any response to David Stern's April 18 query "Has anyone explored this new server?"

Elsevier announced its Math Backlog Reduction Program on June 25, http://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A1=ind0206&L=pamnet&D=0&H=0&O=T&T=1#33, and Math Backfiles on July 11, http://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0207&L=pamnet&P=2003. Elsevier does not appear to have responded, however, to questions Dana Roth raised on July 6 about exchange rate profits, http://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0207&L=pamnet&P=1324.

There was an interesting discussion about Hindawi publishers and the International Journal of Mathematical Sciences. See especially Ahmed Hindawi's response of November 10, http://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0211&L=pamnet&F=&S=&P=3443.
