Message from the Chair

Kristine Fowler
fowler@math.umn.edu

In this my last message as Chair, I want to say how much I have appreciated the other officers—Karen Croneis, Jane Holmquist, Michael Fosmire, and Laurel Kristick–who’ve been working for PAM despite various distractions and unexpected challenges they have faced. Thanks also to all the other PAM volunteers (to avoid sounding like a chatty Oscar winner, I’ll direct you to the list at http://www.sla.org/division/dpam/manual/staff1.html) and to Past-Past-Chair Molly White, who’s been an unofficial but very helpful adviser.

This is also Cynthia Holt’s last Bulletin issue after a long stint of excellent work as assistant editor and as editor. I appreciate the consistent high quality she has produced, in addition to innovations like the fulltext pdf version. Thanks, Cynthia!

When this Bulletin is published, the annual conference in Los Angeles will be nearly at hand. Following is the skeleton schedule of programs and other activities that PAM is leading or involved. More information is always available on PAM’s website at http://www.sla.org/division/dpam/pam2002.html, and “dance cards” with PAM’s schedule will be distributed at the conference as usual. I’m grateful for all the moderators, speakers, hosts, and leaders, most of whom are mentioned in the schedule—they’ve been working hard to arrange substantive programs that will benefit us all. Special thanks go to Elaine Adams and the rest of the hospitality committee, who have planned/are planning many of the networking events.

Conference notes:

  • PAM’s suite will be in the Westin Bonaventure Hotel.
  • The shuttle will serve all the conference hotels (Millenium Biltmore, Westin, Marriott, Wilshire Grand, Hyatt, Figueroa) except possibly the Holiday Inn, which is very close to the convention center.
  • Those interested in the JPL tour must sign up early, because of security requirements.
  • Some program times have shifted half an hour from the earliest plans.
  • Important association business will be happening at the conference—I particularly call your attention to the sessions at which the proposed bylaws revision will be discussed (SLA Presidents Series: 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, 6/11; SLA
  • Annual Business Meeting: 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, 6/12).

I’m looking forward to seeing all of you in June!
