Astronomy News Ruth Kneale The SLA 2002 Call for Papers is out; take a moment and visit the web site at http://www.sla.org/content/Events/conference/2002annual/ to learn more about deadlines, dates and what else is in store for us in LA. An update on LISA IV: The dates are set, and the Scientific Organizing Committee is in place! July 2-5, 2002, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. For more information, visit the web site at http://lisa4.cuni.cz/. It is a site under development, so please keep checking back as the year goes on. If you haven't already noticed, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific's web site has moved to a new location - http://www.astrosociety.org/. Check it out, and update those links and bookmarks! IAU Symposium 184, the last of the series to be published by Kluwer Academic Publishers, is expected early next year. Gerry McKiernan announced the publication of his latest e-Profile, "The NASA Astrophysics Data System Abstract Service: Astronomy", in Library Hi Tech News 18(7): 30-38 (August 2001). In PAMnet Listserv News: A topic that may affect all of us has been in hot discussion on the listserv for the past few months; domain theft. Many places are finding their previously-innocent domain is now registered to a porn site, leading to all sorts of trouble. Keep an eye on your licensing and domain registrations, folks, and nag your accounting department to renew on or ahead of time! Brenda Corbin informed the list that Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts ceased publication at the end of 2000 with Vol. 73, Literature, 2000, Part 1. She'll miss these items in her library, as I'm sure most of us will. The full explanation is given at http://www.ari.uni-heidelberg.de/publikationen/aaa/. On sneaky and/or hidden journal pricing increases: Bernd-Christoph Kaemper posted about more "Fun with Numbers" from Wiley Interscience (although they call it "flexible subscription options"; check it out at the archive (http://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0108&L=pamnet&F=&S=&P=3472) There was also some discussion about the MNRAS 2002 pricing structure, print-only vs. electronic-only vs. both. And let's not forget the Icarus question! Sara Stevens-Rayburn is taking a mini-survey on this journal; mail her at library@stsci.edu if you offer access to the electronic version, only paper, or have cancelled altogether. Liz Bryson sent an article from the NY Times that is dear to my own heart (email if you'd like to know more) titled "Librarians Adjust Image in an Effort to Fill Jobs". You can read the text in Liz's archived posting at the PAMnet site at: http://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0108&L=pamnet&F=&S=&P=4828 On the Copyright Front: In the Humor Arena: |
