Prague in early July 2002; tentative dates are July 3-5.
Ellen Bouton, Brenda Corbin, Uta Grothkopf and Sarah Stevens-Rayburn are
members of the Preliminary Planning Committee, and Marek Wolf is Chair of
the Local Organizing Committee. Astronomy and Astrophysics Reviews will continue to be published
by Springer. Andre Heck posted his results for a Survey of Non-Professional Astronomy
Magazines in Professional Astronomy Libraries. Results may be
seen at: http://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/~heck/npam.htm. In reply to a query regarding whether or not a library at a university
that does not conduct astronomy research should keep back issues of
the Astronomical Almanac, Brenda Corbin wrote that the USNO keeps
a complete collection of U.S. almanacs, as well as those of other nations,
and noted that they are used by astronomers, historians and even novelists.
She forwarded a note from the USNO Director of Astronomical Applications,
who discussed various Web-based services which might act as replacements
for or companions to the Almanacs; the print Alamancs, however, are
still the most complete and valuable archival tool. Marlene Cummins
also keeps the old Almanacs for the UT Astronomy and Astrophysics Library,
but suggested that other compilations would serve the needs of a
general use library, without taking up so much space. Brenda Corbin notes that portraits of statisticians and astronomers
may be found at: http://home.stat.ucla.edu/history/people/sources.htm." Liz Bryson has started a three-year term as liason to the PASP. Contact
Liz at bryson@cfht.hawaii.edu with concerns or comments regarding the
journal. The 2001 SLA Astronomy Roundtable will be held on Monday, June 11, from
10:30 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. Ruth Kneale will moderate the session.
Hope to see you all there! |
