PAM 1999-2000 Business Meeting Minutes Ann Jensen Tuesday, June 13, 2000
The meeting was called to order at 7:45 a.m. by Chair Molly White. Molly thanked representatives of the American Physical Society for their sponsorship of the breakfast. Cynthia Hill, SLA Secretary and Proctor, was introduced. Special welcomes were extended to international members and guests Marie Eugenia Gomez (Chile), Uta Grothkopf (Germany), Nancy Gomez (Argentina) and Prof. Maurice Bruynooghe (Belgium). Kathleen Robertson, Ruth Kneale, and Liz Bryson, all from Hawaii, were also welcomed. It was announced that PAM member Dorothy McGarry has been inducted into the SLA Hall of Fame; member Deborah Kegel is the recipient of the 2000 SLA Science/Technology innovation award for her work developing a password-controlled electronic article delivery system for her institution's faculty. Molly reported on the two main achievements of the past year: continuing development of publisher liaison activity, and increased networking, both regionally, nationally and internationally. Report of the Secretary Secretary Jensen announced that the minutes of the 1999 Business Meeting have been published in the August 1999 issue of the PAM Bulletin (Vol. 27, 1). Minutes of the current business meeting will appear in the August 2000 issue of the PAM Bulletin. Report of the Treasurer Treasurer Fowler reported a total of $17,100 in sponsorship for this year, a 60% increase over last year. The mid-year financial report will appear in the August 2000 Bulletin. Special Award Past-chair Corbin invited Marlene Cummins to come forward, and presented her with a special plaque commending her tireless work creating and maintaining the PAM Manual, which has become an essential tool for members and the board as they perform the work of the division. Marlene created this document at the end of her term as Chair (1990-91), and edited it for the past ten years. Marlene was commended for her dedicated work as keeper of PAM's corporate memory. Pam Yorks will take over as Manual caretaker and editor. PAM International Travel Award: PAM-ITA
Nancy Gomez is the 2000 recipient of PAM's International Member Award, which includes a 2 year membership in the division, during which time she will be an active member of the International Relations Committee. She is the director of the Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her travel to the Philadelphia conference has been underwritten by a generous donation from the Geelong (Australia) Rotary Club. Member Jeanette Regan, Astronomy librarian in Australia, made the initial contact with this donor group, and carried it through to successful completion. The Rotary Club has expressed interest in supporting this travel in the future. Nancy Gomez accepted a certificate of award from Chair White, and thanked the members for the honor of her selection and the opportunity to participate in the Conference. Awards PAM Awards Committee Chair Donna Coletti, and her committee members Diane Fortner and Joanne Goode, announced the award winners. Division Achievement Award
Liz Bryson and Karen Croneis for their dedication and service to the Division through the development of the membership survey, the compilation of the results and the creation of the division's 3-year strategic plan using the input from this survey. Their work has provided backbone and focus for the work of the division this last year and into the future. Division Award
This award is given periodically to recognize significant contribution to the literature of Physics, Astronomy or Mathematics, enhancements to scholarly communications, or significant benefits to libraries. Prof. Maurice Bruynooghe, of Belgium, was this year's awardee. He accepted the award on behalf of his 49 colleagues who had also served as the editorial board of the Journal of Logic Programming. After extensive negotiations with their commercial publisher, the entire board resigned and have started efforts to begin a new journal (Theory and Practice of Logic Programming) with a university press publisher, with subscription costs anticipated less than half of what JLP had been. Prof. Bruynooghe gave a chronology of events leading up to the board's decision, and outlined the risks that they have experienced, such as losing their impact factor count until such time as the new title can be covered by SCI, and some time has passed.
