The Physics Astronomy Mathematics (PAM) Division of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) is now calling for nominations for the International Membership Award. This award will be presented by the SLA-PAM Division to a librarian from the Developing World; it provides a two year SLA membership, for the years 2000-2001.

Nominations should be submitted to the Chair of the PAM Division (address below) by December 31, 1999 and the award will be announced on January 28, 2000.

Objective

The purpose of the award is to provide an opportunity for librarians from the Developing World to be active members of SLA and of the International Relations Committee (IRC) of SLA-PAM.

The following guidelines are posted on the PAM website: http://www.astro.utoronto.ca/pam/awardmem.html

Duration and extent of International Membership Award

The award will be made each year and will provide membership for a period of two years. This will allow an overlap of the memberships awarded for the IRC.

The Selection Committee will consider partially funding the nominee to attend the annual conference of SLA, depending on the level of funds available within PAM.

Qualifications

The nominee will:
Reside and work in a Developing Country.

Be working currently in a library, information center, library school or other information-related capacity, in one of the subject areas relevant to PAM, i.e. Physics, Astronomy, Mathematics or Computer Science.

The nominee will not normally be (nor have been recently) a member of SLA.

Nominations

Self nominations are encouraged. Send a typed, signed statement to the SLA-PAM Chair (at the address below), including information on the candidate's professional career, why this person should be granted the award and any other related functions that qualify the person for the award. Please include the name, position, business address, and (if possible, an email contact address) of the nominee. Documentation should include a current curriculum vitae for the candidate.

Selection

The selection will be made by the PAM Executive Board in consultation with the Chair, International Relations Committee.

Reporting

The award recipient will prepare a short report to the membership at the annual SLA conference immediately following the award. The report can be presented either in person or in writing. The appropriate conference venue will be worked out with the PAM Chair.

The award recipient will also prepare a final report on his/her experience before the end of the second year of the award to be forwarded to the IRC and the PAM Executive Board. The recipient will provide feedback and recommendations for future enhancements for colleagues in developing countries.
