IAU Commission 5 (Documentation and Astronomical Data)

Uta Grothkopf has summarized most of the sessions from the Commission of the 23rd General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union held from August 18 - 30, 1997 in Kyoto, Japan (http://www.eso.org/libraries/iau97/commission5.html).

Brenda Corbin and Uta Grothkopf also produced a report covering the Working Group on Astronomical Libraries from the same meeting (http://www.eso.org/libraries/iau97/libreport.html). The report was posted to PAMnet and contains information on a number of topics, including: astronomy newsletters, an astronomy book reviews database, astronomy librarians and libraries, international astronomy meetings, observatory manual on the web, astronomy preprints, preservation of observatory publications, the USNO Library's project to catalog individual entries from observatory publications series in their collection, astronomical information resources, Astrolib, and EGAL, LISA III, and electronic journal licensing issues.

Royal Greenwich Observatory

The Royal Greenwich Observatory (RGO) has duplicate publications available. The RGO Library is merging with the Institute of Astronomy University of Cambridge Library and is therefore disposing of duplicate and redundant material. Lists of publications are being advertised on the ASTROLIB and EGAL mailing lists and at http://www.ast.cam.ac.uk/RGO/library/disposal.html.

Duplicate "observatory publications" will be removed by 3rd November, so please contact the Ingrid Howard before that date if you have specific requests. Major astronomical journals are being offered to appropriate libraries on "indefinite loan". Please contact her by mid November, if you have any interest in making a bid. Books will be offered for sale via mailing lists and the web site.

Astrophysical Journal Letters

Evan Owens of the University of Chicago Press reported that beginning September 3rd, with the October 10 issue, individual ApJ letters will be published one by one (http://www.journals.uchicago.edu/ApJ/journal). The goal is to have all letters online within two weeks of acceptance.

1998 Astronomy Roundtable

Emily Poworonznek , the moderator of next year's Astronomy Roundtable in Indianapolis, would like suggestions of topics and other ideas.

IAU Pricing by ASP

Robert J. Havlen of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific reports that institutional pricing for IAU Symposia will be $95 per volume, essentially the same as the current average pricing offered by Kluwer. Transactions and Highlights will be $125 and $95 per volume.

Astronomical Object Indexing on the INSPEC Database

This article by Ray Lewis was published in the online Inspec Matters newsletter at http://www.iee.org.uk/publish/inspec/inspmatt/srchcrnr/sc91.html.

LISA III

November 30 is the submission deadline for oral or poster presentations for Library and Information Services in Astronomy III (http://www.iac.es/biblio/lisa/), to be hosted by the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, April 21-23, 1998. Please submit title, author(s) name(s) and affiliation(s), full mailing address(es), fax number(s) and e-mail address(es), as well as a half page abstract to the LISA III email account at lisa3@iac.es or send the information to:

AAS CD-ROMs

Marion Schmitz (IPAC, Caltech) discovered that Volume 8 of the AAS CD-ROM Series has a bug that prevents DOS-based machines from reading the data files. Other operating systems, such as Linux, Windows 95 and NT, Solaris, etc. do not seem to be affected. Kim Langford of the University of Chicago Press indicated that the manufacturer is investigating the problem. She also pointed out that the contents of all of the CD-ROM series are available at http://www.journals.uchicago.edu/AAS/cdrom.

Astronomy Core Collection Guides

Greg Youngen, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has asked for input on subject guides or other lists of materials useful for starting a new astronomy library collection. He has received several items, including:

and an excellent student paper prepared by PAM member Madeleine Needles, MIT Haystack Observatory.

If anyone has additional input, please contact him at gyoungen@physics.uiuc.edu.

Ohio State Overlays for POSS-I
