Membership Committee
The Membership Committee is responsible for encouraging the growth of membership in PAM and in SLA.
Duties:
- To keep informed of current Association information and procedures, including by attending the training session for membership chairs usually held at the annual conference and consulting SLA's Membership Chairs Resources. Direct questions to the Association's Membership Department at membership@sla.org. Request copies of the Association's printed membership brochure (which includes the Application for Membership and is revised annually) as needed.
- To maintain up-to-date membership records as received from the Association office and alert the Association office of irregularities with membership lists. Advise members to Edit their Member Profile so that data changes are sent directly to SLA. Upon notification from SLA of member data changes, forward them to the PAM Bulletin Editor for publication.
- To write welcome communications to new members, along with a copy of the directory and updates (i.e. copies of the changes which have been sent to the PAM Bulletin.) The letter should include information about joining PAMnet. Include new member info in columns for the PAM Bulletin.
- To distribute messages (e.g., to PAMnet or PAM Bulletin) encouraging recruitment of new members. These pieces should review the requirements for membership and include directions for obtaining a membership application form.
- To work with the Past-Chair and Mentoring Subcommittee to identify new members attending their first Annual Conference.
- To remind members to renew membership by highlighting the value of membership. Follow up with delinquent members to encourage reinstatement. Personal telephone calls or e-mails from other members or officers are particularly effective.
- To plan recruitment activities or campaigns to attract new members to the Association, such as distributing brochures and membership application forms to non-member attendees at Division meetings or recruiting among PAMnet members (who may not even realize that membership in PAM is distinct from subscription to PAMnet).
- To plan and carry out membership drives in cooperation with the programs of the Association.
- To update and distribute the PAM Directory annually.
- The AMS has for many years generously produced the Directory; get the appropriate contact information from the previous committee chair and establish a mutually agreeable procedure and timeline (usually the updated information must be provided in June, for August delivery to the Committee Chair).
- Obtain front matter (Chair's message, current staff list, awards information, current Governing Document) in good time.
- When the directories are ready, mail them to all PAM members. The directories are NOT sold, nor given to non-members. (SLA has policies on this issue.)
- Mailing labels may be requested using the Label/Roster Request Form. Air mail may be used for members in non-contiguous locations.
- An advance for the mailing of the directory may be requested from the Treasurer.
- Check with the Executive Board on any issues that come up, as control of all publications of the Division is vested in the Executive Board.
- The listing of PAM offices held by each member is no longer included to save space; this information is available, sorted by office and year, in PAM's Practices Manual and also in each member's entry in SLA's Membership Directory.
At the end of the Committee Chair's term send changes to:
