History of the PAMnet Discussion List

Joanne Goode started the discussion list and was its owner from 1989 through 1996. The PAM Division was probably the first to set up a listserv (as it was then called) for its members. The February 1989 PAM Bulletin has an announcement of the listserv in Joanne's Mathematics column. According to preceding issues, she announced the possibility of such a listserv at the Math workshop during the 1988 annual conference, and it was being tested by November of that year. The discussion list continues to be very popular and useful and counts among its subscribers many more people than are members of the division, including publishers and astronomers.

Joanne Goode was given the PAM Award in 1992 for her work on PAMnet.

Contributed by Sarah Stevens-Rayburn and Marlene Cummins (July 1998).
