History of the PAM Membership Directory

The first issue of the PAM Directory published by American Mathematical Society found in the PAM Archives is the 1982-1983 edition, apparently published in the summer of 1982. The PAM Directory has been continuously published by AMS since that time. Previous to this time the directories were photocopied lists with no sponsor.

In an item in the PAM Bulletin v.9, no.3, February 1982, Nancy Anderson wrote, "The Membership Committee is working on updating the information in the September, 1980 Membership Directory. ... We hope to secure this additional information by March 1982, so that we can send it on to Bill LeVeque, who has offered the services of AMS to run off the Membership Directory for us." In an item in the PAM Bulletin, v. 10, no.1, July/Aug. 1982, the summary of the report of the Membership Committee says, "Nancy expressed her appreciation to the American Mathematical Society and its executive Director, Dr. William J. LeVeque, for printing the directory."

(Information from Dorothy Manderscheid, PAM Archivist 1998)

A special award was presented to the American Mathematical Society, June 1999, "thanking them for publishing the PAM Membership Directory annually since 1982."
