PAM Achievement Award Winners 1997-1998 Details
The PAM Achievement Award is given to those whose professional work is marked by distinction and dedication to librarianship in astronomy, mathematics and/or physics.
1st, 1997 [joint]
Ellen Bouton National Radio Astronomy Observatory
Ellen's tireless efforts with the international astronomical community have been noted in her work with the I.A.U. Thesaurus, the Astrolib listserv and the establishment of the Russian-North American Library Partner's program.

Marlene Cummins University of Toronto Astronomy Library
Marlene has, among other initiatives, recently been connected with the electronic Astrophysical Journal website. This site which exemplifies truly the best in what an online journal should be, is a welcome reliable resource for librarians.

Sarah Stevens-Rayburn Space Telescope Science Institute Library
Sarah has authored or co-authored numerous articles and books (including "Library and Information Services in Astronomy: Proc. Of Colloquium 110 of the IAU). She is also a cofounder with Ellen Bouton of the NRAO RAO/unRAP sheet, which is an entire database of astronomical pre/reprints listed by institution, author, title and
citation.

John W. (Jack) Weigel II, University of Michigan Science Library
Jack has the distinct honor of being the original member of PAM. In the summer of 1972, he persuaded four other SLA members into signing a petition to the SLA Board of Directors requesting the institution of a Physics-Astronomy-Mathematics Provisional Division. Prior to that, Jack was the un-elected chair of the
unofficial astronomy librarians' group which met fairly annually from 1967-1972 and then was absorbed by PAM.

Dorothy McGarry
I am very pleased to announce that Dorothy McGarry is one of this years 1998 Achievement Award winners. Nancy Anderson had written an article about Dorothy back in the November 1994 issue of the PAM Bulletin,
and here are some of the highlights from that article.
- Has been a member of SLA since 1971.
- Was awarded the 1991 John Cotton Dana Award in recognition of her exceptional service to SLA.
- Chair of the PAM Division in 1982/83.
- Chair of the Sci-Tech Division during 1991/92.
- Has filled a number of association level positions - especially serving as chair of the Committee on Cataloging.
- As of November 1993, she had semi-retired from her long and dedicated service to UCLA.
But since then, she has done even more for PAM and SLA.
- Was selected as a Fellow of SLA in 1994.
- Was president of the Southern California Chapter during 1994/95.
- Has become a legacy Club member of SLA.
- Has been the Division Cabinet Chair and served on SLA's Board of Directors.
- Served as SLA's official delegate to the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions from 1993 through 1997, and reported on the conferences held in 1994 through 1997 in Special Libraries and in Information Outlook.
- She was a member of the International Relations Committee for a number of years, and served this year as chair of the Committee on Cataloging.
- Is a current a member of the Global2000 Volunteer Steering Committee.
Richard Funkhouser
- He has been a member of PAM since its founding.
- Was Treasurer of PAM in 1976/77
- Chair of PAM in 1978/79
- Has been member and chair of various committees.
Not only has he been active in PAM activities. He had also served as the Sci-Tech Division chair in 1986/87. He has held numerous posts with the Indiana Chapter of SLA, including being the Treasurer from 1967-69, and
twice being the President in 1973/74 and again in 1988/89.
Mr. Funkhouser has also been active with several Association level positions. Some of these positions include:
- Scholarship Committee, 1976-78
- Nominating Committee, 1980-82
- Professional Development Committee, 1983-89
- Conference Program Committee, 1989, New York.
- Member of the Board of Directors 1989-91 and Chapter Cabinet Chair in 1990/91
