2007 Achievement Award Winner

(See also PAM Division Award Winners , PAM International Membership Award Winners, PAM Award Guidelines, and PAM International Award Guidelines.)

The PAM Achievement Award is reserved for those recipients whose professional work is marked by distinction and dedication to librarianship in astronomy, mathematics and/or physics. The purpose of the award is to recognize those Division members who have made outstanding contributions to the Division.

Our honoree for this year's Achievement Award is perhaps one of the best known voices within PAM, both at conferences as well as on the listserv. With over 540 postings on PAMNET-L since August 1989, this individual is one of the most engaged, forthright, and thought-provoking participants on the list. At conferences, in the mid- and late 1990s, he moderated both the Vendor Roundtable and the Physics Roundtable for the Division. From the late 1990s through 2002, he served as publisher liaison to ISI.

In addition, the recipient has served the library profession through the coordination and implementation of the Division's Translation Index Project, a tool for identifying translations of scientific publications.Formally known as the "Index to Translations,: he has been the project's coordinator since its inception in 2001. The Index is a valuable resource, one of the first such resources to go from print to online, and with a group of librarians committed to keeping it updated.

In the words of one PAM member, "For me, he's a core member [of PAM]. His contributions on PAMnet are invaluable, speaking up as he does and for his wide and deep knowledge that he shares so generously with all."

Writes another PAM colleague, "[He] has always impressed me with his encyclopedic knowledge on a wide variety of science subjects and his very strong opinions on the business practices of commercial publishers. [He] exemplifies to me the ideal of knowledgeable librarianship. He has both a strong sense of service and a strong interest in science. This combination is certainly deserving of the PAM Achievement Award."

For all of these reasons and more, we are pleased and honored to award the 2007 PAM Achievement Award to Robert "Bob" Michaelson.
