SLA 2007: PAM-wide Roundtable

Monday, June 4, 2007, 11:30am-1:00pm

Welcome and Overview

Single Copy Repository for Multiple Libraries - Zari Kamarei, University of North Carolina

Zari presented the current status of the TRLN Single Copy Task Group, of which she is the chair. The charge to the task group is: "to create a single copy ‘opt-in’ serials program in TRLN, with materials housed at the Library Services Center (LSC). Electronic journals and e-archiving have matured to the point where print journals with electronic equivalents may be safely archived off-site, electronic-only collecting in certain areas is a reality for research libraries, and where a single copy archive can reasonably serve multiple institutions."

Thanks to Thomson Scientific & Dialog for their sponsorship of this event!

Thanks to Sally Bosken of the USNO Library for taking notes for the presentations and discussions.

IOP’s New Content Interface - Tony O’Rourke, Institute of Physics

"As you know, 2 major issues always being discussed are e-only access and fair pricing standards. At IOP we are developing a completely new way to use our content, which conceptually involves a license to view. We have started testing the new platform among end users to ensure that their needs are met and that we create a user-friendly interface. We will begin beta testing with librarians (hopefully) in March and April, are aiming for free trial access in May and by the SLA, we should have a prototype which we can show to the Roundtable attendees. Because the platform is still in development, it will be a great opportunity for librarians to chime in with thoughts about pricing, content, formats, etc."

Introductions were made around the room.

Information Fluency with Physicists - Pat Viele, physics librarian from Cornell University

Pat shared the lessons learned from serving on the Committee on Graduate Education in Physics after the committee proposed a study of curriculum. The effort turned into a joint American Association of Physics Teachers/American Physical Society project.

Thanks to Joe Kraus for the digital projector and technical support!

ADS Update - Donna Thompson, Astrophysics Data Service

Donna shared the latest and greatest developments at ADS, such as new login capabilities, linking changes and new search options.
