Notes:
Ever since some of the first private libraries of Mesopotamia in 4000 B.C., libraries have been associated with the resources that they hold. Whether they held clay tablets as in Mesopotamia, or rolls of papyrus like in Ancient Egypt or Rome, or books as in the Medieval monasteries. All through history, collections of knowledge were possessed by the wealthy and the church.
Only in very recent times has the general populace had access to libraries and information. Even then, libraries have been judged on what they owned. This is changing to a great degree because of the technology revolution. Now even small libraries can have access to information in the larger libraries.
