The Leadership Development Institute will introduce SLA's leadership to their roles and responsibilities and give practical guidance for fulfilling these responsibilities. If you are a newly elected chapter or division officer, especially an incoming chapter president or president-elect, division chair or chair-elect, or caucus convener, you should plan to attend. Other leaders attending the afternoon Leadership Workshops will also develop necessary key skills. Current chairs and presidents are invited to attend and share their experiences with colleagues. Networking begins with a continental breakfast at 8:30 am.

Military Librarians involved in e-learning or distance learning give soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines opportunities to pursue their education or life-long learning goals or to maintain their military occupational skills.  These activities take place wherever the U.S. military is stationed, including hot spots around the globe.  Librarians from Air Force, Army, and Navy will tell their war stories about supporting distance learning (or e-learning) in or near combat zones around the globe..

This session begins with a discussion of trends in electronic publishing including use and economics of electronic publications, and continues with collection development, site license negotiation, and what funders need to know for resource allocation decisions. The second part deals with specific library data collection and measurement. Examples will show how special libraries contribute to value and how decisions can be made in light of their effect on value.
Presenters Tenopir and King have published well over 100 publications each and have recently co-authored "Towards Electronic Journals: Realities for Scientists, Librarians, and Publishers."
Moderator: Charles Wegner, Associate Dean Public Services of the Paul V. Galvin Library, Illinois Institute of Technology.

Dr. Portugal is a Washington, DC-based consultant who specializes in applying business strategy and methodology to critical issues facing both the for-profit and non-profit sectors.  Examples of business methodologies that he has used include "best practices" and the balanced scorecard.  His most recent study concentrated on means for measuring the intangible value provided by librarians and other information professionals working in libraries and information centers. A workbook based on the subject and titled "Vaulting Information Intangibles:  Measuring the Bottom Line Contribution of Librarians and Information Pressionals" has been published by SLA.

Frank Portugal, Ph.D. has been a Washington DC based consultant since 1981.  He specializes in applying business strategies and methodologies to critical issues facing the public and non-profit sectors.  Examples of business methodologies that he has used include "best practices" and balanced scorecard.  In particular, he has conducted two major studies for the Special Libraries Association including Exploring Outsourcing:  Case Studies of Corporate Libraries and Valuating Information Intangibles: Measuring the Bottom Line Contribution of Librarians and Information Professionals.  He is particularly interested in the impact of the information age on the librarian profession.
