8:00 AM -12:00 PM (fundamental)
Instructor: Betty Jo Hibberd
Whether we realize it or not, as information professionals we negotiate all the time--allocating resources, determining exact requirements for a specific project, or establishing a new product or service. And while it seems easy for some of us, others view the process of negotiation as a source of conflict to be resisted and avoided if possible. This session can help change that perspective. Its step by step guide, covering preparation, tactics and styles, will help build your confidence as an effective negotiator. Session includes role play and video examples.

Service Planning: Design & Portfolio Management
Sunday, Jun 3, 2007
8:00 AM - 12:00 PM (intermediate)
Instructor: Jane Dysart & Rebecca Jones, Principals, Dysart & Jones Associates
Libraries and information centers have a long tradition of adding new services or enhancing existing services and programs in response to client needs and wants. This tradition results in a portfolio of services and products that grows with more “addition” than “subtraction.” But as resources continue to tighten, libraries need to make tough decisions that better balance the “adding” with “subtracting” using a service portfolio management adopted from business environments. This workshop outlines what libraries can learn from other sectors by using a systematic method to make those tough decisions and effectively manage their service portfolios. The focus is on developing a service strategy and portfolio that best serves clients, today and tomorrow, without draining financial or human resources and is driven by the library’s mandate and goals.
Systems Thinking and Risk Management: Tools for Information Professionals
Sunday, Jun 3, 2007

Instructor: Michael F. Moore, Sara R. Tompson, & Lorri Zipperer
Information and knowledge transfer professionals can play a key role in minimizing uninformed decision making that can result in risks to the organization and to their own services. Assessing the role of information services and how these services can be leveraged to identify, analyze and mitigate risk is a primary value that information professionals can bring to their organizations Understanding the process for identifying or minimizing these risks and articulating them appropriately through the use of systems diagramming and other tools can help elevate the library professional to a strategic role in the organization and situate the information center's services as strategic tools.
