The SLA Legal Division Grants & Awards Committee is proud to announce the winners of the 2008 Professional Grants.

The New Member Professional Grant is awarded to Madeline Kriescher

Madeline is a Reference Librarian at the U.S. Courts Library of the 10th Circuit in Denver, Colorado.

Madeline mentions many benefits to attending SLA. “Because of this growing diversity in the services we provide and the patrons for whom we provide it, attending the SLA Annual

Conference offers a unique opportunity to gain insight from government, academic, public and many other types of libraries

The Veteran Member Professional Grant is awarded to Roberta Fox

Roberta is a Research Specialist at Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell LLP in Chicago, Illinois.

Roberta emphasized that her interest in going to the SLA conference is predicated on the amazing network of cross disciplines of association members. She wrote, “We aren’t just asked to find the law anymore. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve fished out the business card of a medical or pharmaceutical librarian to ask for research advice.

The Non-US Based Law Librarian Grant is awarded to MANDY OSTICK

Mandy is the Manager of the Virtual Library of the BC Courthouse Library Society in Canada.

Attendance at the SLA conference is uniquely beneficial to Mandy. She states, “SLA’s Tech Zone sessions in particular can help me succeed in creating a website that benefits not only our primary users but also the thousands of web users worldwide who already turn to our Society’s website (www.bccls.bc.ca) as a high quality public legal information source.”

The Committee congratulates the winners and thanks all the very qualified applicants for their participation.

Initial Joint Project with AALL Identified
A Guide to Negotiating with Vendors

The Legal Division and AALL’s Private Law Libraries Special Interest Section are exploring a joint project to develop a practical guide to negotiating with vendors. This results from a longstanding effort by the LD and PLL-SIS to promote closer cooperation between our organizations, and is hoped to be the first of many such joint efforts. The negotiation project/guide may include:
  • Best practices for effective negotiation;
  • A list of mentors and negotiating experts chosen from our ranks;
  • Bibliographic information on negotiating;
  • A joint conference program for the 2006 SLA and AALL annual meetings, including negotiation workshops;
  • A list of consultants found to be helpful to members;
  • Information about what is typical and reasonable in contracts, in areas such as copyright; and
  • Ideas for industry-wide change that may increase the leverage of law libraries, such as developing regional and national buying consortia and information clearinghouses.
Are you an expert negotiator? Have certain approaches to negotiation worked particularly well? Would you like to be involved in this project? A number of volunteers will be needed to make this effort successful. If you have ideas regarding this project or are interested in participating, please contact Phil Rosenthal at 703-740-5923 or Judy Harris at 314-259-2298.
