Heading for San Antonio - SLA Conference 2001
by Cindy Spohr – Lexis Publishing

It's not too early to start planning to attend the Special Libraries Association 2001 Conference. Legal Division Chair, Anne Abate, and Legal Division Program Chair, Gayle Lynn-Nelson, are already hard at work with program coordinators to create a dynamic program for conference attendees.

The Conference will be held in San Antonio, Texas, June 9 through 14. This year's theme is 2001 – An Information Odyssey, which recognizes the changing environment in our field. It encourages each of us to journey on our own odyssey of professional growth during a time of professional evolution, so that with the right attitude, initiative and education we have a chance to propel our profession into the 21st century.

As we journey into an ever-expanding world of technology, we find ourselves enmeshed in a professional revolution. Our odyssey begins in an environment of change, conflict and competition. Technological expansion is escalating at a dizzying pace. As information professionals, we must embrace the changes in our environment, molding the stream of raw data into valuable packages of knowledge. To stay ahead of the curve, we must take on every chance to learn, to share and to grow.

The 2001 Conference provides an excellent opportunity to build on our existing skills with new knowledge and to continue to network and learn from each other.

The SLA Conference Program Committee develops the conference theme and logo, plans the general session and other special sessions and coordinates the division, caucus and committee programming, while the Legal Division Chair and Program Chair are coordinating the professional and educational programs for Legal Division Members.

Highlights of Legal Division programs include:

The Effective Use of Communications Tools, Customer Service, Legal Issues of Presentations, Reporting Mechanisms in the Library, Working with (and Understanding) MIS Professionals, Current Internet Legal Issues and Comparative Global Legal Issues.

Some old favorites will again be presented in San Antonio including the Emerging Technologies Breakfast and 60 Sites in 60 Minutes.

In addition, networking opportunities abound in the Ice Cream Social, Business Meeting and Luncheon, the Open House, and the Social Event.

Updates regarding the overall conference and the Legal Division programs will be available in this column and on the Legal Division listserv and Web site. The preliminary program will be mailed to all SLA members in March 2001.

Now is the time to begin planning to attend this dynamic, educational and thought-provoking conference!
