HE LEGAL DIVISION
intends to play a leading role in Special Libraries
Association as it becomes the premier association of the library world. Our profession
is our central focus and our activities will promote professional development and
competence.
Founded June 11, 1993, the Legal Division serves as a forum for the exchange
of information, ideas, and knowledge among law and regulatory affairs librarians. We
address concerns unique to librarians practicing in private law firms, businesses, and
government libraries. Our Web site exists to assist us in communicating our ideals
and goals. To navigate this site, use the links on left-hand side of each page.

Initial Joint Project with AALL Identified
A Guide to Negotiating with Vendors
The Legal Division and AALL’s Private Law Libraries Special Interest Section are exploring a joint project to develop a practical guide to negotiating with vendors. This results from a longstanding effort by the LD and PLL-SIS to promote closer cooperation between our organizations, and is hoped to be the first of many such joint efforts. The negotiation project/guide may include:
- Best practices for effective negotiation;
- A list of mentors and negotiating experts chosen from our ranks;
- Bibliographic information on negotiating;
- A joint conference program for the 2006 SLA and AALL annual meetings, including negotiation workshops;
- A list of consultants found to be helpful to members;
- Information about what is typical and reasonable in contracts, in areas such as copyright; and
- Ideas for industry-wide change that may increase the leverage of law libraries, such as developing regional and national buying consortia and information clearinghouses.
Are you an expert negotiator? Have certain approaches to negotiation worked particularly well? Would you like to be involved in this project? A number of volunteers will be needed to make this effort successful. If you have ideas regarding this project or are interested in participating, please contact Phil Rosenthal at 703-740-5923 or Judy Harris at 314-259-2298.
