CHAIR-ELECT'S REPORT:
Tillman referred to two things she received and read the week before this conference to put the coming year in context.

1) The Internet Index #22 by Win Treese http://www.openmarket.com/intindex
This webzine says something about the world in which we are operating at this point in time.

-The estimated number of web users in the U.S. is 57,037,000
-The estimated number of web pages in April 1998 is 320 million
-The number of ISPs in Saudi Arabia is 0.
-The number of phone calls to INTERNIC registration service Feb 1998: 40,476
-The number of gopher requests to INTERNIC registration services Feb 1998: 71,744
-The number of www requests to INTERNIC registration services Feb 1998: 17,091,774
-Percentage of chop sticks labeled with URLs at Mary Chong's lunch: 12.5
-The number of dogs with a URL on her name tag: 1

2) A book by a nonlibrarian Mary Morris with the title "Cybercareers" published by Sun Microsystems, 1998. Morris refers to information management skills in the chapter on Arts and Media Overview and Content Skills and succeeding chapter Arts and Media Meta-Information Skills: Human Information Design Spectrum, Information Abstraction, Information Engineering, Document Design (SGML/HTML), Message Refinement, Interactivity Design, Usability, and Human Performance. The titles of jobs of the future read: Subject Matter Mentor, Niche Mediators, Reality Envisionist and talked about moving from teaching to mentoring.

To talk about where we are going in the next year or so, Tillman touched on six topics: the Brighton Year 2000 Special Meeting in Fall 2000, the Minneapolis Annual Conference, the Division reengineering with new and redesigned sections and their scope notes, the b/ITE newsletter, and our web site and listservs.

The Brighton Program Planner is Deb Wiley and we look to partner with other divisions and involve our European chapter members. We hope to do something that will be of value to those not attending as well.

The Minneapolis Program Planner is Trudy Katz. She is hard at work planning programs which include Disaster Recovery, the Year 2000, and the European monetary unit, Data Mining, Metadata, among others.

The Board recognized the need to reengineer our services since the section names and scopes have remained static for at least a decade with the exception of the Networking Section, which was added in 1993. So, on Sunday, we added two new sections (Webmasters and Programming, Systems Analysis and Design), and resculpted the others with new names and/or scope notes. The Revised and New Section Names and Scope Notes for Consideration at the SLA ITE Division Board Meeting, June 7, 1998 and Additional Votes from Sunday Board Meeting were distributed. These passed unanimously at the Sunday Board Meeting.

The listserv now at SLA headquarters has received new life this year with Dee Magnoni's book talk, and hopefully we will bring valuable content to it in the coming year. The web site is at SLA as well and has information about sections as well as our activities as a whole. As we look ahead we need to look at more active ways for the division to add value for our members not just at annual meeting but during the year as well.

The Documentation Division, the predecessor of the ITE Division, was founded in 1949. The 50th anniversary of the Division will be celebrated in 1999 at the Minneapolis Annual Conference.
