Continuing Education Course -- Digitization Workshop
Digitization is much more than converting a physical or analog object into its digital equivalent: it efficiently repurposes crucial information resources to improve their use by staff, colleagues, and end-users.  For libraries, digitization can open the collection to a much larger user-base, whether that user-base is comprised of researchers, students, or business people.  A dangerous trap for digitization efforts is to focus on the conversion process instead of other, mission critical, pre-scanning issues such as selection criteria, preservation of original documents, metadata creation, software and hardware concerns, integration into existing systems, and legal issues.  These issues and more will be discussed in this workshop.

Games for Training: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The notion to use computer games for military training is almost irresistible. Unfortunately, unstated, unexamined assumptions about learning and the character of and driving forces behind commercial games can lead the way to unpleasant results if we don’t keep the goal of proficiency “gains” ahead of blindly use of “games.” I discuss a handful of lessons learned while developing and deploying two new training systems within DARPA’s DARWARS program. Perhaps they will constrain the dark side of computer-based training from tainting other, training-based, efforts to deliver a wide range experiential learning delivered by light-weight simulations

Distributed Digital Preservation: The MetaArchive Approach
The MetaArchive Cooperative is a model for secure, distributed digital preservation for born-digital and digitized cultural heritage content. Six Southeastern universities, working with Library of Congress and with funding from its National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP), have developed a distributed preservation network based on the open source LOCKSS software, and are using that network to preserve one another's at-risk digital content. This presentation will provide an overview of this innovative, collaborative approach to digital preservation, which is now being coordinated by the nonprofit Educopia Institute.
