The Geography and Map Division was one of the 25 subject divisions within the SLA until 2003, when it officially became a section of the Social Science Division.  The Geography and Map Division was established in 1941 to encompass all aspects of the production, procurement, processing, and utilization of geographic and cartographic materials and includes the professions of geography and map librarianship. With the merger with the Social Science Division, the Geography and Map section will be able to continue to meet this need and offer programming at the national level without the financial strain of being an independent division.

The Honors Award can be given annually, at the discretion of the Honors and Awards Committee, to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution in the field of geography, cartography, or map librarianship, either for specific activities or for general service and contributions in these fields. First consideration is given to members of the ivision. The Honors Award was established in 1954 and was first awarded at the Association's annual conference in 1955.

Most Recent Recipient: Elizabeth Unger Mangan

In 2003, The Geography and Map Division completed a three year Geographic Information Systems Awareness Grant through SLA.  This grant provided for the audiovisual materials needed for GIS presentations at the SLA annual conferences. A Powerpoint presentation entitled "GIS and Libraries" was created to introduce GIS and its many uses to those who may not be familiar with it. The presentation is best viewed in Internet Explorer.

A site has been created with links to some of the Members Libraries
