Business Breakfast Meeting
Monday, June 7, 1999

Call to order: 8:00 AM.

The sponsorship of Advanced Information Consultants, Majors Scientific, IFIS (for sponsorship of the FAN Distinguished Member Award), Academic Press (for the door prize of a copy of the Encyclopedia of Human Nutrition), and Cargill (for the Kathi Kohli scholarship) for the FAN breakfast and Business Meeting is gratefully acknowledged.

Announcements:
An anonymous donor has agreed to refund attendees $5 for the breakfast.
There are reports from the various committees and officers on the tables. These reports will be published in the next issue of Food for Thought.
Anita Battiste has a ticket for the (sold-out) Blues and BBQ, for sale Secretary's Report (Katie Clark).
Minutes from 1998 Business Meeting: Approved. These were published in the summer 1998 issue of FFT.

Treasurer’s Report (Linda Maddux).
Briefly, we’re doing well! Over $9000 was raised in sponsorship, thanks to the work of Anita Ezzo, Grace Dote and Alice Marksberg. The full Treasurer's report will appear in the next FFT.

Archives
We have signed a contract to keep the archives at Penn State. Amy Paster will be our resident archivist. They will move to Penn State in October. If you are the chair of a committee, be sure to send a copy of your reports to the archives.

FFT (Heather Moberly)
Thanks to our mailers for year 1998/1999: Oscar Meyer, Campbell Soup. Volunteers were solicited from among the attendees to write FFT reports about the FAN-sponsored sessions. Readers like to read about FAN member's accomplishments. Send more of these! Readers also like to read discussions about libraries and web sites. Send more! We're beginning to consider moving FFT to an electronic format. A survey will be sent to solicit input from the membership about this. Thanks to those who advertised in FFT this year: IFIS, Wiley, Ralph McElroy Translation Company, Leatherhead, Business Research Services, Research Books, Inc., and BIOSIS

International Relations (Barb Hutchinson for Jean-Philippe Decraene, who is on assignment in Albania)
Worked on a SLA task force that sought to define the role of international liaisons. A draft was prepared.
Issued an invitation to attend the International Librarian Award Ceremony, that will be held in the Minneapolis Orchestra Hall.

Membership Report (Sue Wilkinson):
There are 332 FAN members.
Recently a new FAN Directory was mailed to the membership. Send corrections to Sue.

Election of Officers
There were no nominations from the floor
The slate of officers was accepted by unanimous acclaim, with Cindy Cantrell as Chair of FAN

Procedures Manual (Carolyn Speakman): no report.
The committee will work on revising the Manual next year.

Strategic Plan (Linda Hanrath):
The newly revised Strategic Plan will be in FFT and on the FAN web page. Please send revisions and comments. Survey Committee (Pat Wilson): A summary will come out in FFT. There were 50 responses. The results will be used in planning the program for next year.

Vendor Relations (Alice Marksberry).
Nineteen supporters gave us a total of $9350, a record high! A report will appear in FFT.

Awards Committee
FAN Distinguished Member Award (Barbara Hedges)

This award is sponsored by IFIS. The award this year goes to Dick Wallace (who unfortunately can not be present at the breakfast to receive it, as he is attending to other SLA duties).

Kathi Kohli Memorial Scholarship (Margaret Drew)
This award is provided jointly by Cargill and FAN.The award this year goes to Christine Spanner, a graduate student in the MLIS program at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota. She will work in the office of Governor Jesse Ventura.

FAN Retirees: Rita Fisher (Washington State) and Lillian Messner (University of Kentucky)

Door Prize: Won by Valerie Perry. Donated by Academic Press: Encyclopedia of Human Nutrition ($950).

Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to the 1998-1999 FAN Board members and those who helped in planning the Minneapolis program.

Installation of New Board.
The mortar and pestle, and the FAN chef's hat were passed to Cindy Cantrell, the 1999-2000 Chair of FAN.

Philadelphia Program Planning (Cindy Cantrell)
Among the programs being planned (send suggestions!):

SLA and our membership have urged us to strive for quality over quantity of programs.
For the first time, vendors will be present Monday - Wednesday, rather than Sunday - Tuesday.
Volunteers are needed for strategic planning, international relations, and the program planning committee.
