Mission Statement:

The objectives of the Education Division are to:

  • serve as a forum for the exchange of information and knowledge among individuals and organizations providing information services, products, research, and professional education within the fields of education and librarianship;
  • encourage research in these areas; and
  • advance the leadership role of its members in putting knowledge to work for the benefits of their organizations and clients.

Strategy:

The Division should at all times be aware of the particular issues and needs facing its members in their role as information professionals. It is the function of the Division to translate the goals and objectives of the Association into a concrete and practical plan for the future.

The Division delineates the following goals for the next 5 years:

Goal No. 1 Professional Development
The Education Division seeks to develop the knowledge and capabilities of its members by:

  • providing high quality conference programs which address issues of greatest priority to them;
  • providing a forum for exchange of new ideas, knowledge, and research through the publication of Education Libraries, a refereed journal, which publishes articles in the fields of education, library education, and special librarianship; and
  • providing a professional network through the Education Division listserv and other technological means.

Goal No. 2 Membership Development, Retention and Services
The Education Division seeks to ensure a robust, growing and active membership by:

  • recruiting new members through the development of public relations materials and an active recruiting campaign;
  • involving more members in the leadership of the Division; and
  • polling membership on a regular basis to determine level of satisfaction with Division activities and products and to solicit new ideas on the direction and mission of the Division.

Goal No. 3 Fiscal Responsibility
The Education Division seeks to maintain a healthy financial position and sound fiscal control over the Division's finances by:

  • attracting sponsorship to various events at the annual conference;
  • obtaining advertising for the Division Bulletin; and
  • reviewing the Division's financial position and transactions at each executive meeting.

Goal No. 4 Liaison with Other Divisions
The Education Division seeks to develop stronger relations with other divisions of SLA by:

  • co-sponsoring events at the annual conference with other divisions of SLA and
  • publicizing the Division's activities to other relevant divisions' members and encouraging those divisions to advertise their activities to Education Division members.

Goal No. 5. Research
The Education Division seeks to encourage research among members of the division by:

  • maintaining a small Division research fund to foster research projects, the results of which will then be published in Education Libraries and
  • encouraging presenters at the annual conference to submit their papers for publication in Education Libraries.
