Greetings to all friends and members of the division!  I hope everyone is enjoying the spring season as we approach yet another annual conference.  As always the division has planned several programs that will be of interest to our members and in fact all SLA members.  We are lucky this year to be offering a variety of sessions that reflect the work of our membership as well as the expertise of librarians and information specialists from all over the U.S.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you on Sunday afternoon at the division board meeting.  You don’t have to be a member of the executive board to attend.  Immediately following the meeting we have a dinner get-together at a local Mexican restaurant.  If you are interested in joining your education division friends for Mexican food at 5:30 on Sunday please RSVP me at jdamican@csulb.edu.  And in case you’re still hungry we have an open house Sunday night with our friends in the Museum and Social Science divisions.

On Monday June 11 the division is co-sponsoring a session on Knowledge Skills for the 21st Century as well as a presentation by the National Library of Education.  We will also have an open house on Monday night with the Museum and Social Sciences divisions.  On Tuesday we start off early with our annual business meeting.  I encourage as many members as possible to attend this ticketed event.  In the afternoon I am pleased to have 3 illustrious members of our division (all board members) discuss the role of librarians in the test industry.  Also, on Tuesday we are co-sponsoring a program that promises to be very interesting:  Batgirl was a Librarian.  Tuesday night will wrap up with another open house. Please make every effort to attend our division sponsored activities and do thank our donors: Basch Subscriptions, Dialog, ILS, Inmagic, Lexis-Nexis and RoweCom.

On Wednesday the 2001-02 division board will meet for breakfast.  Please give your support to Martha as she takes on the responsibility as chair of the division.  I’ll have lots of opportunities to thank lots of people at the conference for their hard work on behalf of the division, but I want to thank Martha especially (in writing) for supporting me this year.  Martha took on many of my responsibilities while I was recovering from yet another extensive surgery.  Needless to say she did a great job.

I am also happy to announce that this spring I was invited by ALA to join an evaluation team for library school accreditation.  The actual site visit will take place in October, but this is significant because my involvement with accreditation is a result of the interest the education division has taken in library school accreditation.  I will report more on this at our annual meeting.

Again I urge all of you to attend the annual conference in San Antonio and I look forward to seeing you at the division events.

Mid-Winter Conference Report from the Chair-Elect:
    Martha Wilding

Greetings from Iowa where the snow is melting and spring is just around the corner!

I would like to thank you all for granting me the opportunity to serve as Chair-Elect for the Education Division. The first benefit came in January when I got to escape this dreadful winter for a few days to visit lovely Savannah, Georgia and attend the mid-winter conference. The weather was great. The food was even better. And, the interesting sites in Savannah never end! I had a lot of fun.

The other big benefit to serving in a leadership position is the chance to be on the inside of the annual conference planning. During the 2002 conference planners meeting, I met many leaders from other Divisions and Chapters. We had a chance to network, share ideas, and look for avenues of collaboration. It was very good for me to reach out beyond our small group and to meet others with different points of view. I look forward to the challenge of putting together some interesting programs we can all enjoy in Los Angeles.

Attending this smaller conference also gave me a chance to learn more of the ins-and-outs of SLA. I met the folks running for office and was able to cast a more informed vote this year.

Now that I’m back in Iowa, I’m continuing to network via email and to think about program and CE course ideas. If you have any ideas to share with me, I would love to hear from you. The planning will start to be more concrete in San Antonio, so now is a good time to speak up if you have anything you want to see on the program in 2002. I’ve also been helping with fundraising which is going well again this year.

I will see y’all in San Antonio (see, I’m already in a Texas state of mind)!
