Inside the Medical Section

Formed in 1996, the Medical Section of DBIO is a forum for DBIO members who are engaged or interested in the acquisition, organization, dissemination and use of information in the biomedical and health sciences.
The Medical Section provides leadership and an opportunity for the development, promotion, and improvement to meet continuous learning and professional development needs, within the field of medical librarianship.

Here's some information from a 2005 survey of the Medical Section members on what they do and where they are from:

Our distribution by organization type:

  • 33% of our members work in an academic setting (with and without hospitals)
  • 23% are corporate librarians
  • 19% are work in hospitals or medical centers
  • 12% are affiliated with government entities, or non-profit institutes, or academies
  • 21% don't really fit into any category

Section members by geography:

  • 36% from the East (DC on up to ME)
  • 27% from the Midwest
  • 18% from the West
  • 12% from the Southeast
  • 4% from the Mountain West and Southwest
  • 3% from Canada
  • and one from Hawaii
