Description: Sudden community changes create new information service needs. Agile professionals go beyond preservation, protection and service continuity to improvise creative new services to meet that challenge. After more than two decades as a hospital librarian, Michelynn McKnight http://slis.lsu.edu/faculty/McKnight/McKnightvita.htm earned her PhD and joined the faculty of the Louisiana State University School of Library and Information Science. She wrote The Agile Librarian’s Guide to Thriving in Any Institution http://lu.com/showbook.cfm?isbn=9781591586685 (Libraries Unlimited, 2010).
Dr. McKnight collaborated with Dr. Lisl Zach, Assistant Professor, The iSchool at Drexel, on a completed a three-year project “Investigating Library and Information Services During Community-Based Disasters” supported by a National Leadership Grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services. The research method of grounded theory development used in this project development was based on lessons learned in preliminary studies information services improvised in Louisiana and Mississippi after hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The end product of this research will be case based modules to train students and practitioners how to improvise such services in a disaster.
A brief business session of the Medical Section will be held immediately before the program.
