SLA Biomedical and Life Sciences Division

DBIO-Sponsored CE Courses

Upcoming Courses

The Biomedical and Life Sciences division of SLA will be offering several continuing education classes at the annual meeting next June in Washington D.C.

These classes will be available to both conference attendees and those not attending the conference.

1.) *Molecular Structures: Retrieval and Visualization (event #230)*

* Date/Time: *Saturday June 13, 2009 - 8:00 am – 12:00 pm

*Cost:* US $199 member / US $299 non-member / US $199 student member

Characterization of molecular structures provides insights into basic biology, drug development, health and disease. This course will introduce databases (such as NCBI's Molecular Modeling DataBase) and viewing tools (specifically Cn3D) used to store, image and manipulate 3-dimensional molecular structures.

2.) *Genomes and Genomic Resources (event #310)*

*Date/Time: *Saturday June 13, 2009 - 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

*Cost:* US $199 member / US $299 non-member / US $199 student member

One of the greatest achievements of modern science is the solving of the human genome sequence. This course will introduce the online resources for accessing, searching, viewing, and manipulating the human genome.
Multiple types of genome mapping will be introduced as well as a variety of genome-related tools for exploring sequence annotation (biological feature) data.

3.) *Bioinformatics Track: Genomes and Structures (event #235)*

*Date/Time: *Saturday June 13, 2009 - 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

*Cost:* US $299 member / US $399 non-member / US $299 student member

* This option allows attendees to take both the "Molecular Structures: Retrieval and Visualization" and the "Genomes and Genomic Resources" courses for the price of one full-day course.

For all three courses:

Location: *Martin Luther King Junior Branch, Washington D.C. Public Library. For directions, please contact Tom Harrod.

To Register: *Contact Tom Harrod *AND* go to the online Conference Registration.

4.) Measuring Your Impact: Using Evaluation for Library Advocacy (event #290)

This course will involve teach librarians how to be advocates for their libraries. At the end of the class, librarians will be able to show the value of their library’s services. Lectures and group exercises will move the participants through the steps of an evaluation process.

For directions, please contact Layla Heimlich. Please bring $10-15 for a metro train ticket to the venue and for lunch.

Location: National Library of Medicine

Date/Time: Saturday June 13, 2009 - 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

To Register: Contact Layla Heimlich AND go to the online Conference Registration.

Cost: US $299 member / US $399 non-member / US $299 student member

If you have any questions about these events, please contact Tom Harrod or Layla Heimlich
