Volunteer Spotlight — October 2009
Vicky Platt, Vendor Relations Chair
Vicky Platt is the Director of Research for Willamette Management Associates, located in Chicago. Willamette Management Associates, founded in 1969, is nationally recognized for its standard of excellence as the premier business valuation consulting, economic analysis, and financial advisory services firm.
For several years now Vicky has provided vital services to the Business & Finance Division. She was Bulletin Editor, 2002-Winter 2008, and for the past year has been Vendor Relations Chair.
Vicky says her involvement in the division supports her work life in three very tangible ways. First, her superiors know that she is continuing her education and staying on top of the latest research techniques and technological advancements by attending the annual conference. Second, she has the ability to consult with a network of professionals if ever there is a project with which she needs assistance. And third, by holding an office within the division she demonstrates her commitment to the profession.
She goes on to say that one of the great aspects of being in this division is that it provides access to incredibly talented, intelligent and successful colleagues. Reaching out to members is made easy through the discussion list. If one ever needs assistance with a task, someone in B&F probably has the experience or expertise to help you. There are also numerous opportunities to volunteer within the division. By doing so you are automatically connected with other dedicated members of the division.
One of her personally most memorable experiences was when she spoke at the Baltimore conference with Sylvia James on how to research hard-to-find industries. Vicky says, "Since I was worried no one would show up to my first SLA presentation, you can imagine my surprise when people stood in the halls and sat in an adjoining room to hear us speak. The experience I gained from that presentation is not only a proud moment, but a wonderful line on my resume."
For achieving maximum benefit from one's involvement with SLA and the Business & Finance Division, Vicky offers the following three tips:
- Volunteer within the division in an area that interests you. You will meet professionals with the same interests and gain great experience.
- Attend division-sponsored events at the annual conference. It is a great way to network with division members from around the world. I've made some great friends from chats during division open houses.
- Give your input to the division board. This is your division. To get the most from your membership the board needs to hear from you. Your energy and insight will help keep the division moving forward while being relevant to the members.
Thank you for all you do, Vicky, and congratulations on being this month's Volunteer in the Spotlight.
