From Reaching Out to Working Within: Evolving Toward Embeddedness at the University of Illinois
Carissa Holler, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the popularity of Bloomberg's Global Product Certification Program has provided opportunities for Carissa Holler, the Business and Finance Information Librarian, to become progressively more involved in the teaching activities of the College of Business over the past 5 years. Using Bloomberg certification as a sample mechanism, the speaker will discuss how strategic and serendipitous factors have contributed to the evolution of her role from outreach librarian to Department of Finance instructor, and how the role could evolve in the future.

Carissa Holler is the Business and Finance Information Librarian and an Assistant Professor of Library Administration at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She received her undergraduate degree in Physics and Astronomy as well as her MBA with Finance and Statistics concentrations from the University of Iowa. Carissa spent several years working for state government and public accounting organizations before returning to school to receive her Masters degree from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois. In her current position since 2005, her outreach efforts are primarily directed toward students in client-based consulting projects and students pursuing proficiency in financial information resources such as the Bloomberg Professional Service. Her talk will focus on the latter.

Business School or Bust: Gaining a Foothold Across Campus
Jeff Graveline, University of Alabama at Birmingham

For years, business school faculty and students at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) had been a hard bunch to crack. Professors often provided their own library research instruction and many students simply did not know about or use library resources, often relying simply on Google or Wikipedia. Thanks to persistence, unique marketing tactics and a bit of luck, Jeff was able to break down old walls and has become a staple in business research lectures for classes across the entire business school. Course-tied instruction has skyrocketed and individual research clinics have increased dramatically. You will hear about some of his successful outreach tactics as well as some of the not-so-successful ones.

Jeff Graveline

Jeff Graveline is the Reference Librarian for Business and Government Documents at the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Mervyn H. Sterne Library. He holds a BA in History from Virginia Tech and a JD and MLIS from the University of Alabama. Prior to joining the UAB faculty in 2006, Jeff practiced bankruptcy law and business litigation in Birmingham, Alabama. Jeff's previous library experience includes being the Director of News Research at The Tuscaloosa News and a Customer Support Librarian with VTLS, Inc. Jeff is a member of the UAB Copyright Working Group and the UAB Scholarly Communications Working Group. He has presented numerous lectures and workshops on copyright, author rights and fair use.
