Division
Fall 2002
Editor Kristine Spanier,

A Message
from the Co-Chairs
We’d like to thank all of our Division
officers and members who have shared their time and their ideas. Their
efforts have helped to raise our Division’s visibility to new and
long-standing members, to the vendors who serve us, and to SLA’s entire
membership.
Some of the new initiatives and endeavors
include:
A New Member Referral Program.
Membership
Chair Gretchen Hazlin has created this membership-building program.
Existing members who bring us a new member will be entered in a quarterly
drawing. Winners will receive a $50 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble.
Contact Gretchen at gehazlin@yahoo.com for more information.
Advertisements Welcome on the Division
Website and Bulletin. Webmaster Steven Knittweis, Public Relations Chair
Rebecca Rydzewski, and Treasurer Tesse Santoro, were all instrumental in
the development of the Division’s advertising policy and rates, and our
mailing to potential advertisers. We are delighted to welcome Mintel as
our first advertiser. Mintel is a leading supplier of competitive media,
product and consumer intelligence.
Coordination of Conference Programs.
Many
members have played an enormous role in the conceptualization and
organization of programs to be held during SLA’s Annual Conference in New
York City in June 2003. See the related article, “NYC’s the Place to Be,”
for more information on all of our programs and events.
Interesting & Informative Bulletin.
Bulletin Editor Kristine Spanier continues to draft articles and collect
information for our quarterly newsletter. Her innovative ideas include
last quarter’s “Advertising & Marketing Librarianship After 9/11,” a story
that provided members with the opportunity to share their thoughts and
experiences. In fact, SLA borrowed her idea for their webpage devoted to
such stories.
Division Website Changing & Growing.
Webmaster Steven Knittweis has revamped the Division’s website and has
been constantly updating the information found there. In addition to
current and past issues of the quarterly Bulletin, now members can find
information about recently-held and upcoming events and programs, current
news about members, and a live news-feed of stories on the advertising
industry from Moreover Technologies.
The Advertising & Marketing Division has
many leadership positions available for the 2003-2004 term. We will be
revising the Division’s Procedures Manual in the coming months. The manual
includes descriptions of all Officer positions. Once the revised edition
is approved, we will post it to the website. In the interim, if you’d like
to find out more about any of the Division’s leadership opportunities,
please contact us at
gwen_loeffler@nyc.yr.com or
stephen_fleming@nyc.yr.com.
We look forward to seeing all of you in
New York in June.

A Message
from the Co-Chairs Elect
Jen will be making the great
sacrifice of heading down to New Orleans this
January for the SLA Winter Conference. Louisiana
has got to be warmer than
Minnesota in January so it will be tough! Planning
for 2004 starts now and
if left to our own devices we might lock in these program
gems - "Ins and
Outs of Library Automation", "Cataloging 101", "Boolean for
Dummies" and "EBSCO and You".
Don't let this happen!!!
Contact Betsy or Jen with your ideas and
suggestions for what you'd like covered in Nashville, 2004.
In addition to planning for
2004 we also will be asked by SLA to participate
in a LEADERSHIP SUMMIT. The purpose
of the SUMMIT is to provide feedback on a
new SLA governance structure. Any
ideas or concerns that you want aired?
Just let us know.
Your Co-Chair Elects,
Betsy Hoza and Jen Hahs
NYC’s The Place
To Be
By Gwen Loeffler and Stephen Fleming
Division members have played an important
part in conceptualizing, organizing and facilitating many of the programs
the Division will be conducting during SLA’s annual conference being held
in New York City in June 2003.
Four Division members – Robin Feuerstein
from IPG’s Center for Marketing Intelligence, Christopher Brune from Bates
Worldwide, Kathy Hunter from the ANA, and Stephen Fleming from Young &
Rubicam Advertising – will showcase their agency library’s websites and
share their best practices during “Library Websites in the Advertising
Industry.”
Gretchen Reed from Euro RSCG MVBMS
Partners will moderate a panel discussion – “Information Sharing Across A
Global Agency Network” - featuring CIOs and Knowledge Managers from three
agencies – Saatchi & Saatchi, Young & Rubicam Advertising/Wunderman and
Hill & Knowlton. Executives will discuss their agency’s
information-sharing policies and practices, and will describe the role
web-based tools play in the implementation of their policies.
The AAAA will welcome Division members
for a special luncheon and behind-the-scenes tour of their facilities by
invitation only. In addition, they will play host to our annual
roundtable. And the libraries at BBDO Worldwide, Bates Worldwide, Young &
Rubicam Advertising, DDB Worldwide, IPG Group and the ANA, will open their
doors to Division members for tours.
The Dialog Corporation will be sponsoring
a fun, multimedia presentation - “Ad Lib: The Advertised Librarian.” Jenny
Tobias, Librarian at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, will speak on the
representation of librarians in advertisements – how librarians have been
depicted “as repressed sexpots and information-economy bumpkins, but also
as sophisticated, diverse, fully-human professionals.” The Solo Librarians
Division and the Women’s Issues Caucus are collaborating on this project.
Many of you have responded to our appeal for examples of ads that feature
or mention librarians, and we thank you for your help. Look for an article
on this program in the February 2003 issue of Information Outlook.
Marketresearch.com is assisting the
Division with arrangements for our program “Collecting Market Research
Online.” They have secured commitments from CEOs and founders of online
market research firms – MedPanel and BuzzBack - who will participate in
this session. Speakers will discuss the advantages and challenges involved
in conducting market research online. A representative from Grey
Healthcare Group will speak on the topic from the agency’s perspective.
For more information on all of the
programs and speakers, go to the New York Conference page on the
Division’s website at:

Bipartisan Grid Lock Here
By Gwen Loeffler and Stephen Fleming
The Fall meeting of the Board of
Directors was held on Friday, October 25, 2002, at SLA headquarters in
Washington, D.C. This was an extremely productive meeting with close to 40
items on the agenda. All of the items were discussed at length, and when
necessary, they were voted on and approved. Members will be briefed on all
of the topics at SLA’s Winter Meeting being held in New Orleans, January
23-25, 2003, and again at the Annual Meeting in New York City, June 8-11,
2003.
- Board members voted to certify the
election results on the Bylaws revision. This certification allowed the
revisions to go into effect on Friday, November 1, 2002.
- The Board approved a statement of the
Objectives for the Executive Director. This thorough job description
includes a time table that they hope will “create greater
accountability.” For the complete document, go to:
http://www.sla.org/Documents/boarddocs/A03-05.htm.
- The Branding Task Force provided an
update on their progress and a time table for items that need to be
completed. The Board approved the Task Force’s recommendation to bring a
proposal to change the name of the Association before the membership at
the Annual meeting in June. For details on the proposed names and the
rationale for each, go to:
http://www.sla.org/Documents/boarddocs/A03-19.htm.
- The Board heard a report from a group
conducting a needs assessment survey. This group has been charged with
the task of determining how best to tailor SLA’s services to meet the
needs of both members and non-members. For more information, go to:
http://www.sla.org/Documents/boarddocs/B03-05.htm.
- At the request of the Board, the
Association Office Operations Committee proposed a new Governance Model
and Philosophy. The Board reviewed the statement and asked that it be
prepared for a formal vote at the Winter Meeting. For more information,
go to:
http://www.sla.org/Documents/boarddocs/B03-07.htm.
- The Special Committee on Competencies
for Special Librarians presented the Board with a revised edition of
Competencies for Special Librarians of the 21st Century. The text of the
new version can be viewed at:
http://www.sla.org/Documents/boarddocs/A03-18A.htm.
- And those of you who plan ahead can
get your first peak at the logo for SLA’s 2004 Annual Conference being
held in Nashville, Tennessee, June 6-11, 2004, at:
http://www.sla.org/pdfs/04nashvillelogo.pdf.
We’ve only touched on some of the topics
that were discussed at the Fall Board meeting. You can view the complete
agenda and link to many of the documents at:

Discuss
Amongst Yourselves
By Gwen Loeffler and Stephen Fleming
Over the course of the past three months,
the Advertising & Marketing Division’s discussion list has been extremely
active receiving more than 35 postings. Division members and nonmembers
have used the list to request assistance and advice, to share best
practices, to notify members of events and opportunities, and more. We
encourage you to continue to use the discussion list as a medium to
solicit help and network with members.
Some recent topics include
recommendations of market research firms that specialize in the baby
boomer market, the use of humor in advertisements, the availability of
logo databases, statistics on media buying services, and advertising
expenditure forecasts. Others have used the list to post job
opportunities, to offer free sources and services, and to share SLA and
Division news.
All Division members should have been
automatically added to the list. If you have not received a message in the
last few weeks, please reactivate your subscription by sending an e-mail
message to: lyris@lists.sla.org.
Type the message: subscribe sla-dam [your e-mail address] [your first
name] [your last name] in the body.
To post a question, announcement, or
topic for discussion to the list, send an e-mail message to:
dam@lists.sla.org.
We only have the chance to get together
in person for the Division Roundtable once a year. Consider the
Advertising & Marketing Division’s discussion list your year-round,
electronic roundtable.

Favorite Sources of the Advertising & Marketing Division Members
The Encyclopedia of Major Marketing
Campaigns (Ed. By Thomas Riggs, Gale, 2000) is a great resource. It
contains about 500 or so 3-6 page profiles of marketing campaigns,
including spending, strategy, effectiveness of the campaign, and
competitor information, along with company and brand history. Each profile
also includes references to other useful articles on the campaign. This
book is wonderful for when customers request case studies and serves as a
great jumping of point for more detailed research.

Member Information Service of the AAAA.
For agencies who are members of the AAAA, this service is invaluable. If
you are stuck on a project, are behind in your work or don’t want to
reinvent the wheel, one quick phone call is all it takes to hook up to
some of the country’s most knowledgeable advertising librarians. Rush
prices have gone up recently but they are still a bargain. Their expanding
database of FAQ’s at the AAAA website is also extremely helpful in a
pinch. And the new Amigo database (powered by Dialog) is great for both
librarians and end users.

Making Meetings
Work
by Patricia Petruga
It’s extremely difficult to walk into a
room of strangers and introduce yourself, to appear confident, funny and
intelligent; in other words make a good impression.
The following suggestions will make it
easier for you the next time you have do to this. Think of it as a
challenge!
Here’s a quick how-to:
Before the event, find out what is the
purpose of the event, business networking, annual meeting, or business
charity cocktail hour. What will be expected of you? Who will attend?
Focus on the benefits of the evening.
What is your goal? Goals are to establish rapport with people you meet -
your potential clients, gain insight, learn new information, increase
business and career opportunities and have fun doing it.
Business cards – have lots! Feel free to
give out your card to people, but don’t make it a goal to hand them out
willy-nilly to everyone in the room – tacky tacky!
Dress appropriately. It’s usually safe to
assume that it’s a business meeting and to wear business dress. If you’re
not sure as to what to wear, contact the convener to find out the type of
meeting so you can dress in a manner that is appropriate and in an outfit
that you will feel comfortable in. Be sure to cover that tattoo, unless
you’re going to a biker’s convention, in which case anything goes.
Arrive on time. Professional meetings
usually have a set schedule and if you’re not on time, you can miss
valuable time to network, which is the reason you’re attending the event.
If you don’t know anyone, introduce
yourself to the convener, or host for the evening, and ask to be
introduced to people. Believe it or not, this is one of their roles at a
professional meeting, to introduce people to each other.
Now is the time to move from ‘guest’
behaviour to ‘host‘ behaviour.
Remember to make eye contact, smile and
offer a firm handshake. Extend your hand first. Make the most of nametags,
that’s why they are used.
Act warmly towards others and introduce
people to each other. Find connectors: Mary, I’d like you to meet Eva. Eva
works with the artists group that you are interested in.
Plan conversation. DON’T be spontaneous,
please. Provide conversation starters. Read the newspaper in the morning,
business, sports and arts. Keep pertinent articles and review them before
you attend the meeting to have details at hand. Memorize a few good,
tasteful jokes. No lady from Nantucket limericks please!
Listen actively.
Mind your manners.
Move on little doggies. Mingle. Meet.
That’s what you’re there for.
Relax and enjoy yourself.
In general, you want to make a good
impression, to be seen as in control, approachable, interested, someone
that people would like to do business with. Someone…kind of like yourself.
Sounds tough? It is, but it’s not time to
go shopping. Pick up the gauntlet of professional meetings – people go
forth and network!

of going to Nashville, they used teleconference and WebEx.
Gretchen Reed, Euro RSCG MVBMS

On October 16, former Division Chair
Gretchen Reed was guest lecturer at Pratt for a library science class on
advertising and marketing sources. During the class, Reed showed a reel of
commercials, and described the contributions her information center made
to each spot. She reviewed a list of major advertising and marketing
publications and databases, and discussed the importance of membership in
SLA, especially the Advertising & Marketing Division. After the class,
several students expressed an interest in learning more about advertising
agency information centers.
Kristine Spanier, Carmichael Lynch
Past-Chair Kristine Spanier just returned
from a trip to Spain. She traveled to Madrid, Sevilla, Granada, Marbella
and Barcelona. Upon returning to work Kristine and her supervisor, Doug
Hagge, hosted the third installment of OpenMIND, a quarterly series
featuring speakers who bring creativity to their life’s work. This
quarter’s speaker was Andrea Berlin, a world-renowned archaeologist. Her
topic was on the uncovering of three layers of ancient civilization in a
remote area in Israel and how she was able to piece together a history for
the people who lived there. Past OpenMIND speakers included an FBI
profiler and an action figure artist who latest work includes all of the
Spiderman figures. Now Kristine and her husband are getting ready to
welcome a librarian of the future – she/he will enter the world around
March 1, 2003.

Marketing, and Educational Services Librarian for the National Academies.
Her job includes major research requests, library outreach and executive
briefings, and promotion of new products and trials. She also designs
classes for the research staff on such issues as the verity of information
on the Internet. Before entering the library world, she worked as a market
analyst and worldwide strategist in corporate America. Georgeann received
her MSLS from the University of Kentucky in 1998 and joined SLA in the
same year. In her spare time, she rock climbs, rows on the Potomac, and
does home improvement projects on her new condo. She is also currently
working towards an MBA (most likely in finance) at Johns Hopkins
University. Her first love, however, is philosophy, and she sees herself
pursing a Ph.D. somewhere down the line.

United States in pursuit of online information retrieval skills and
received her second Master's in Library Science from Clarion University of
Pennsylvania. In her spare time she enjoys nature-gazing, biking,
photography and classical music.

NEW BUSINESS RESEARCH SOLUTION SERIES
ANNOUNCED BY THOMSON LEARNING
Contributors Being Sought For Both Data
Source Evaluations and Problem Sets
Thomson Learning announced today a new
eight-volume series of business research reference guides and data source
books that will be published in the second quarter of 2003 through their
subsidiary, South-Western Publishing.
According to Thomson, this comprehensive
new series is aimed at the non-professional corporate researcher and
advanced business student and is intended to fill a major gap in the
reference and training literature. A newly formed Editorial Advisory Board
for the series includes Linda Adams (Boston Consulting); Jo Cooper
(Goodwin Proctor); Lynn Ecklund (SEEK); Monica Ertel (Korn/Ferry); Cynthia
Hill (Sun Microsystems); Mary Lee Kennedy (Microsoft); Anne Mintz
(Forbes); Barbara Quint (Searcher Magazine); Pam Rollo (First Boston);
Sandra Tung (Boeing), Liz Vugrinecz (HP), and Robert Schwarzwalder (Ford
Motor).
Thomson also announced that The Benjamin
Group, Santa Barbara-based specialists in e-content development, will
produce the series for Thomson and South-Western. William A. Benjamin,
founder of Investext and First Call and Managing Director of The Benjamin
Group, reported that they had issued an invitation to the business
research community to participate in the series by providing either
real-life examples of business research problems (and worked-out
solutions), or critical, in-depth evaluations of online research data
sources.
Benjamin stated that each research
methodology volume will also contain sections on detailed research
strategies including one complete case study of a complicated,
multi-question research project where both data collection results and
data analysis are presented in sequential detail. He reported that editors
for the first six volumes will include Chris Dobson, F1 Services (Company
Research), Cynthia Shamel, Shamel Information Services (Market/Industry
Research), Susan Klopper, SMK Consulting (Accounting and Financial
Research), Jan Tudor, JT Research LLC (Investment Research), Genie
Tyburski, Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll,LLP (Legal, Regulatory &
Intellectual Property Research), and Marsha L. Fulton, The Fulton Group
(Product Development Research).
Steve Momper, Director of Professional
Publishing at South-Western and editorial sponsor of the eight-volume
series said, “We think this new research solutions series will greatly
enhance the teaching of online research techniques and methodology to both
the entry-level corporate analyst and the serious students of business
administration. In fact, we plan to produce a core textbook on business
research data analysis and management to go with this series, so we have a
serious commitment to what we see as an important emerging market in the
teaching of secondary business research.”
