SLA has been working hard to demonstrate value to its
membership over the past few years. Our own chapter has contributed to
SLA’s goals by offering members free access to virtual programs,
and by setting a minimum difference between SLA members' and
non-members' rates for events. We want it to be clearly evident why you
would want to join SLA, and easy to demonstrate SLA’s value to
your employers. We offer great professional development opportunities
both virtually and live in our regions, and we connect information
professionals through networking, and through our discussion list.
To emphasize the importance of SLA membership to our
profession, and to recognize your investment in your professional
community, the Western Canada Chapter Board has decided to make the
chapter discussion list "members only"
beginning in October 2006. This
change will occur after the SLA NorthWest Regional Conference. I
encourage those of you who have been considering joining SLA to do so
before October. You’ll benefit with a reduced rate to the
conference, and you’ll continue to receive free access to
employment postings, notice of SLA’s many professional
development opportunities, and the benefits of access to a network of
your peers when you need a quick answer to a question or an opinion
about an issue. If you are a member, and you have concerns about our
decision, please email me. I would be very happy to hear your opinion.
