Do you remember turning 20? Were you taking tentative,
questioning steps into adulthood, nostalgic for
your lost childhood? Or were you brimming with
confidence, sure that success would be yours at every
turn?
This is the beginning of a significant year for SLA
Western Canada Chapter, as we will be celebrating
our 20th anniversary in 2005. Perhaps it is an appropriate
time to reflect on how far we as a chapter have
journeyed, and to consider what we envision and want
for the future. If you have not done so before, please
check out the history-related links on our website:

SLA WCC boards, past and current, have always tried
to conceive and maintain a "big picture" of
and on behalf of the Chapter. After all, it is
this big picture that helps to guide us as we
develop and deliver the programs that our members
expect. This year, our version of the "big picture" will
be especially vital as we will be revising our
strategic plan and our policies and procedures
documents (now called the Recommended Practices).
As we prepare to work on both documents, we will
ask for member input. Be ready to speak up!
As I mentioned in my last message we are very pleased
to welcome SLA's President, Ethel Salonen, as a
visitor to our chapter this year. Ethel will be
in Western Canada between March 7 and 11, 2005
to help us kick-off our 20th anniversary celebrations.
It's not too early to save the date! Although we
are still putting the finishing touches to our
event schedule, please make an effort to come out
to meet and hear Ethel. Because of time constraints,
Ethel will be visiting only three WCC cities (Vancouver,
Calgary and Winnipeg). However, we urge all of
you outside of these cities to make an effort to
attend the function closest to you. Announcements
will be made via the discussion list very soon.
As this issue of Wired West goes to press, your president-elect,
Christina Zeller and I will be in Tampa for SLA's
Leadership Summit. "Leading to succeed: developing
skills for your future" is the theme for this winter's
summit. As representatives for Western Canada Chapter,
we'll be attending with the future of WCC firmly
in mind.
