Candidate Speech presented to Association Leadership
January 22, 2004
Patricia Cia, Candidate, Chapter Cabinet Chair-Elect *
The Special Libraries Association mission to promote and strengthen its
members through learning, advocacy and networking concisely shows our
strengths as well as areas for continual improvement. Learning and
networking opportunities are Association, Division and Chapter strengths.
Whether at the local meeting or annual conference, our members connect
through social and professional development opportunities.
We continue to live through changing times at SLA. We are again finding
our path to the future and are ready to communicate it to the world.
Communication is vital for advocacy or promoting our value as information
professionals to our colleagues and management as well as to the business,
government, academic and other special communities we serve. The unveiling
of our new branding initiatives provide an opportunity to open discussions
on our profession and our value to the community.
Communication has been a major theme during my six years on the
Western Canada Chapter Board. Whether as Treasurer, Bulletin Editor,
Communications Director or President, I found it important to actively
encourage communications among members, the Chapter Board and the
Association.
Our Chapter embraced technology such as the discussion list, web site
and now virtual programming in order to exchange ideas, learn and to ensure
continuity for our Chapter . . . all especially important when board members
may live over 2000 miles apart and the Chapter's area is two million square
miles.
No matter the challenges, we should all take advantage of SLA's
tools and guidance in exploring new ways of providing value to our
members. I hope to bring my diverse experiences with the Western
Canada Chapter to the position of Chapter Cabinet Chair-Elect.
I look forward to working with you, learning about your Chapters
and helping you in any way, including to communicate with your members
and the Association.
Thank you!
Patricia Cia
