Invitation to Mentor a Studentby Tracey Carmichael, B.C. Securities Commission SLA WCC believes that it is important that mentors be available to students when they need one. In the past we have tried matching students with experienced information professionals with mixed results. Both parties often experienced guilt when they did not have the time to meet with each other on a continued basis and many relationships fizzled as a result. Students still want and need mentors to help them with particular problems or to act as a sounding board for their ideas and dreams. This year I'd like to ask you to offer your help by adding your name and biographical information to our list of mentors available to students. Your participation signals your willingness to make yourself available to a library student to answer questions related to their career or professional education. Neither party is expected to make a commitment on an ongoing basis. Students need contact with successful professionals to ensure that their educational and career decisions and experiences will prepare them to meet the demands of today's workplace. The UBC student Chapter is excited by this opportunity to access a network of experienced professionals and I'm sure that library students at the University of Alberta will find it equally valuable. Please complete the attached form and return it to me by October 19. I will prepare a list of participants and add it to the WCC website where it will be available to library students in western Canada. Thanks for your help! Tracey Carmichael Librarian
