SLA Conference 2008 - Conference Report, Part 5
By Lena Kuzmina
The official numbers from SLA’s 2008 annual conference in Seattle are quite impressive: 5,011 total registrants, 1,681 exhibitor registrants, and 464 booths.
My report will cover the sessions that I attended and found valuable as well as some highlights of the conference.
To Teach So They Can Learn
Speaker: Dr. [http://ildaking.net/Ilda Carreiro King], Educational Consultant. The session description promised that librarians would learn “research-based principles and practices that can optimize learning, retention, and transfer of skills for adult learners.” One of many session’s takeaways: “
Adults are practical, focusing on the aspects of a lesson most useful to them in their work. They may not be interested in knowledge for its own sake. Instructors must: tell participants explicitly how the lesson will be useful to them on the job.”
Here you will find the session’s handout. The first two links in the recommended resources did not work, but otherwise this handout is a great tool for making our teaching/learning sessions with clients engaging and memorable.
Closing General Session
Here is a good write-up on Seth Godin’s presentation at the Closing General Session: http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/jkbaumga/2008/06/18/be-remarkable-advises-seth-godin-at-sla/
