Skills
for Success in Your Career
Wednesday, May 14
& Thursday, May 15
Ulla de
Stricker is in Vancouver for a series of informative and
practical sessions. If you’ve ever attended one of Ulla’s
presentations, you already know what an engaging and inspiring speaker
she is…if you haven’t then you’re in for a real treat. Please join us
for one or more of the following sessions; we believe there’s something
for everyone.
PROGRAM DETAILS
Session 1:
Wednesday, May 14
12:00 noon - 1:30pm
SLAIS (UBC campus)
Exact
location TBA
This session is free and is
sponsored by SLAIS; light
refreshments will be provided.
Ulla de Stricker comments on the skills – and they are not the
technical competencies that might come to mind at first – that make for
achievement in the “real world” of working in the range of public and
private organizations. She provides suggestions on areas in which a bit
of savvy is
handy when it comes to developing a career.
Starting with the
not-so-simple matter of becoming aware of one’s own strengths and work
environment preferences, a successful career demands interpersonal
finesse, negotiation skills, team leadership, an understanding of
organizational psychology and process, and more. These all add up to
what
is sometimes referred to as “people skills”. In particular, the
information profession requires a solid dose of outreach, client
relationship building, and marketing – areas of endeavour some regard
with a measure of trepidation.
Ulla’s message is “fear not -
everyone can learn to navigate the workplace and to contribute to
succeed in the work environment.”
Session 2:
Wednesday May 14
5:00 – 8:00pm
Pacific Room
The Sandman Hotel
180 West Georgia Street
Vancouver
This session requires an
email RSVP and paid
registration, see below.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK
HERE? BUILDING POSITIVE AND PRODUCTIVE
STAFF AND TEAM RELATIONS: Simple principles for leaders and team
members to foster a supportive work environment
Drawing on many years of observations in numerous library and other
information intensive workplaces, Ulla comments on key approaches and
techniques everyone can apply to help create an environment where
employees look forward to coming to work. Good communication,
collaboration, and interpersonal practices are common sense yet still
may need conscious attention or permission. Enthusiastic reactions to
previous presentations on the general topic of workplace relations
indicate that attendees may take away pointers to apply on the job
immediately … and for the rest of their careers.
There will be a cash bar, and light
refreshments will be provided.
Session 3:
Thursday May 15
5:00 – 8:00pm
Pacific Room
The Sandman Hotel
180 West Georgia Street
Vancouver
This session requires an
email RSVP and paid
registration, see below.
HUNCHES AND LUNCHES -
USING THE INFORMATION/KNOWLEDGE AUDIT TO
UNDERSTAND INFORMATION CULTURE: How does culture influence day to
day practices – and hence our strategies and services?
To succeed in our roles as information professionals supporting
knowledge workers, we need to understand how the organization’s
information culture drives their information, records, and knowledge
related behaviours – and once we do, we are in a better position to
devise services and outreach activities adapted to such a
culture. Ulla outlines the steps in a discovery process to
uncover the true underlying culture and current practices, and provides
tips on recommended techniques.
There will be a cash bar and light
refreshments will be provided.
