SLA WCC Strategic Plan 2009-2011

Mission

SLA WCC provides individuals and groups working in the field of information with an energizing environment in which to build and share the skills and expertise they need to thrive and prosper in an information environment. We achieve this through leadership, relevant communication, mentoring and the provision of outstanding learning opportunities.

Overview

In support of SLA WCC's mission and values, the following strategic initiatives provide a framework for 2009-2011 decision-making. Annual operational plans, developed by the chapter board, will provide specific directions toward achieving SLA WCC's strategic initiatives.

Strategic Initiatives

  1. SLA WCC will work to strengthen WCC community of information professionals by recruiting new members
    • Board Executives represent SLA WCC and special libraries by speaking at library schools and library technician programs annually
      • Establish an annual fund to support student memberships to be awarded at chapter promotion events.
    • Communicate with and support student chapters in Western Canada by providing mentoring and regional professional networking opportunities.
    • Offer promotional events such as job shadowing, host a student or a library crawl on an annual basis to students and information professionals.

  2. SLA WCC will develop the skills and knowledge of its members by providing a supportive community for continuing education
    • Provide programming, both in-person and self-directed, to link members to changing technologies and new systems of communicating
    • Develop local member awareness of the many programming and communication tools and self-development programs available through SLA
    • When financially possible, provide a travel grant for a new information professional to attend the SLA Conference

  3. SLA WCC will run a fiscally responsible and responsive organization
    • Operate a fiscally responsible chapter, through developing and managing a balanced annual operating budget
    • Review the use of communication tools, capabilities and services annually to make communication easier and more effective for our geographically dispersed membership.
    • Review and revise WCC board positions to ensure flexibility and viability in managing the chapter

  4. SLA WCC will encourage the development of our present and future leaders.
    • Offer opportunities for mentoring and reverse mentoring on an annual basis
    • Recognize members' achievements through an annual award
      • Outstanding Information Professional Award
    • Board development
      • Support SLA leadership training for board members by offering travel grants to executive members

  5. SLA WCC will be an active participant within the professional information community
    • Continue to work in partnership with SLA and other information professional associations to develop joint programming throughout Western Canada
    • Develop and continue professional networking opportunities
